Hamtramck is a city in the county of Oakland in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 58,528 at the 2010 census, making it the 9th largest city in Michigan and home to the University of Michigan's Ross School of Business. It is also one of four cities within Macomb County that are designated "Urbaniver City". The first settler in what would become Hamtramck was Nicholas J. Krieger, who arrived on July 1, 1824 from Ohio with his family. He built a cabin near present-day Main Street and East Grand Boulevard. A year later he married Sarah Cook and they started a small farm around what is now South First Avenue and West Third Street. In 1827 they bought land from John Saginaw for $100 and began to build a house on it, which they named "Krieger House". They were among the first settlers to arrive in what would become Hamtramck Township on November 3, 1830. In 1835 Chauncey Davenport established an unsuccessful business venture called Davenport & Company mercantile store at today's corner of First Avenue and Olive Road (now Old Ford Rd.). This store becameHamtramck’s first post office when open on April 4, 1840 Davenport died two years later while on vacation in Egypt after investing money into this new enterprise which failed miserably due to high costs associated with travel as well as competition from other merchants operating out of Detroit. For many years after his death Hamtramck Townspeople believed that he had lost all his money because no one could find any evidence to support this claim; however recent research has shown that there may have been some truth to this rumor even though no records remain to support it Davenport was buried at Elmwood Cemetery just east of downtown Hamtramck today where an annual festival celebrates his memory called “Davenport Day” . In 1846 Chauncey’s widow Fanny founded the Female Seminary (later renamed St Josephs College) which taught women underprivileged girls various skills for self-reliance such as reading , writing & arithmetic . After three years she closed operations due largely to financial difficulties but reopened again in 1850 with additional facilities including a library + school annexe . Classes were conducted indoors until1871 when building permit #3 was obtained for an outdoor gymnasium which remained operational until 1927 In 1870 Fanny gave birth to their only child Anna Prentiss DavenPORT who became Mrs . Hamtramck, Michigan is a city in Macomb County, Michigan, United States. The population was 43,711 at the 2010 census. Hamtramck is part of the Detroit–Warren–Dearborn Metropolitan Statistical Area. It is home to the Ford Motor Company and other large companies. The community has been known as an important center for manufacturing throughout its history. The first settlement in what is now Hamtramck was made by Jacob Riemen in 1814 and named after his farm on the east side of the River Rouge. By 1830, there were about 20 families living here. The first school opened in 1832 and taught grades one through five. In 1835, John Dennison bought land here and began construction of a gristmill which became one of the largest mills in America. Dennison also founded Hamtramck Township on this land which served as its government until it was dissolved in 1865 when it became part of Macomb County. A post office called Hamtramck was established in 1836, and remained operational until 1907. The first store opened here on July 4th, 1840 by Jethro Pumphrey (or Ishmael Pope). A railroad station called Hamtramck Junction was built just north of town on the Ontario Railroad line; however this never came into operation because trains stopped running at that point due to restrictions set by Congress regardingRailroad construction across state lines during the Mexican-American War (1846-48). In 1859, three brothers named Augustus Ewing started a sawmill lot next to their father's lumberyard in what is now downtown Hamtramck after their father died suddenly young. They continued operations under their own name until 1870 when they merged with another sawmill family to become one of America's largest woodworking concerns - Ewing & Whitney Mill Co.. This mill produced pianos for many famous celebrities including Mrs Lincoln during her time as First Lady from 1861-1865; President Abraham Lincoln's private secretary John Hay from 1865-69; General George Armstrong Custer during his last military campaign during Indian Wars (1876); Commodore David Dixon Porter Fleetwood during World War I (1916) - all while located within hamilton township limits! As recently as 1978 local resident Geraldine Ferraro stated that she had opposed GM moving its production back headquarters from Flint Hills outside Detroit because “I didn't want my house along that road where they were going – right next door” finally approving a move less than two miles away only days before her death due to leukemia several months later . Today much remains unchanged save for some smaller changes like larger homes being replaced by condos or apartments over time leading some residents nostalgically referring back decades ago when small towns could still be counted on fingers

The city was named for Hamtramck, a small village in Germany that served as a center for trade with Upper Canada. In 1847, Hamtramck became the first municipality in Michigan. The population ofHamtramck grew rapidly during the 19th century, reaching over 100,000 by 1860.During the American Civil War, Hamtramcke sided with the Union and lost much of its infrastructure and people to fighting. After the war, Hamtramk experienced rapid growth again thanks to new businesses and ideas coming from outside of Michigan. By 1870,Hamtramck had reached its peak population of over 150,000 people. However, due to economic reasons and social unrest within the city limits,the population decreased moderately until it stabilized around 200-300 thousand by 1900.Since then things have been slowly going back up again as more people move into town from outlying areas (or leave because of poor economy). Today there are about 30K residents living in Hamtramcke proper while another 20K live nearby suburbs including Midtown/Eastside/Southwest sides etc., making it one of the most densely populated cities in Michigan
