Hamtramck was founded in 1837 as a post office and then named for General James Hamtramck, an American officer who fought in the Mexican–American War and later served as United States Secretary of War under Presidents Andrew Johnson and Ulysses S. Grant. Hamtramck is located on the southern border of Macomb County and is bordered by Lansing to the north and east, Warren to the south and west, Troy to the northwest and Ottawa to the southwest. It lies within Wayne County. According to the United States Census Bureau, Hamtramck has a total area of , all of it land. As of 2010, there were 34,521 people living in Hamtramck city limits; these included 17,844 households (68%) with children under age 18 living with them, 31% of whom were married couples living together, 15% had a female householder with no husband present, 5% had a male householder with no wife present, and 52% were non-families. Of all households 8% were made up of individuals and 2% had someone living alone who was 65 years old or older. The average household size was 2.63 and the average family size was 3.12

The first permanent settler in what is now Hamtramck Township was John Jacob Astor in 1814. He founded a gristmill and store on the east side of the MI Canal near what is now Midland Avenue. In 1835, David Wells bought the mill from Astor and started to expand it into a flour mill and papermaking plant that became one of the largest in America. buildings from this time include: Manufacturing Company House (now flats), Hudson's Bay Company Warehouse (now apartments), millsbridge schoolhouse (later used as an ambulance station), Griggs Store (now an apartment complex), Masonic Lodge No 1 Building (now demolished) and Pearly Gates Cemetery Chapel with original altarpiece which is located on Railroad Street just south of Midland Ave., within same boundaries as current day Midland Ave./Route 98/Hamtramck High School building addition. In 1907, Wells died suddenly after giving birth to his only child and his estate was sold off parcel by parcel until it came together to form what is now Hamtramack Township. During World War II, Hamtramck was one of nine townships in Wayne County affected by gasoline rationing; all but two were placed into voluntary evacuation status on September 15th 1941 due to high gas prices caused by the war effort.
