Hamtramck, Michigan is a city in Midwestern United States. It is the county seat of Oakland County and was founded in 1836. The population was 67,868 at the 2010 census. Hamtramck is home to the world's second largest open-air ammunition market, which opened in 1984 and attracts more than $1 billion in business each year. The first Ammunition Plant was established by Edward "Pete" Dyer on July 4th, 1836 with six cannons for defense against Native Americans. The Cannon Plant would produce over 1 million rounds of munitions per year until it closed its doors in 1918 due to World War IWWII bombings and the post-war economic recession that followed. In 1886, Nicholas Flournoy purchased a plot of land east of downtown Hamtramck for $5 per acre. He built what became known as Flournoy Arsenal which produced artillery shells and bullets for use by both American forces during World War II as well as Nazi Germany during the Holocaust. After WWII ended, production at Flournoy stopped but ammunition still remains stored here to this day! Hamtramck is a city in Wayne County, Michigan, United States. The population was 21,711 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Wayne County. Hamtramck was founded by John and Lois Hamtramk in 1837. The Hamtramcks were among the early settlers of what became Detroit. In 1847, they sold their land to the Michigan Central Railroad company for $3,000. The city was incorporated on December 14, 1872. It grew rapidly due to its location on the former Detroit-Windsor Railway line and its connection to other cities in Michigan and Illinois via this route. Growth led to annexation by other municipalities in 1978, including River Rouge and Livonia; however, Hamtramck retains full municipal autonomy within Wayne County. Hamtramck is home to two large universities: Wayne State University and Northern Michigan University (NMU). Additionally, many small businesses are located throughout the city center and near downtown areas such as Midtown Business Park or Pembroke Heights Shopping Center.
Hamtramck was founded in 1824 by Nicholas Griggs and his wife, Susannah. The town was named for General James Hamtramck, who played a significant role in the War of 1812. The first hamlet in Hamtramck was called Hainesville. In 1827, the Griggs family moved to what is now known as the West Side of Hamtramck and built a log cabin which served as the nucleus of what would become Hamtramck. The Griggs family operated a small farm until 1845 when they sold it to Monsignor John Jansen. In 1865, Mayor Aiken appointed Augustus Kelley as mayor and then re-elected him twice more before he died in office on November 3, 1865. On January 1, 1870, Mayor Kelley's successor John Pritchard appointed Abram DeWitt as mayor with authority to make all laws necessary for carrying into effect the provisions of the Municipal Corporations Act (1865). DeWitt served until his death on September 5, 1880. The total population of Hamtramck during this time period amounted to only around 1800 people but it grew quickly due to its strategic location at the mouth of the Raccoon River and its close access to transportation routes such as railways and canals. By 1900, however, there were only around 350 residents living in Hamtramck proper while over 2000 people lived in nearby towns such as Lackawanna and Canada East. On October 15th 1905 local resident Arthur Schneider published a paper entitled "A Demand for More Roads" that protested against increasing traffic congestion on Michigans roads caused by large numbers of automobiles traveling down muddy rural thoroughfares without regard for public safety or courtesy towards pedestrians or other drivers who were trying hard enough not to get stuck behind wheels deep in snowdrifts! Schneider's paper gained national attention and soon led to increased funding for road construction throughout Michigan includingHamtramk! During World War II many locals volunteered their services within the military but most notably Sergeant First Class George Waddell who spent two years working at Ford Motor Company’s Rouge plant manufacturing parts used inside Nazi Germany! When war ended he returned home but decided instead to open his own garage where he continues today providing service similar to that provided by soldiers during wartime
