By 1835 there were 10 inhabited dwellings within our boundaries! In 1840 Grosse Pointe Woods was chartered as an unincorporated township by General John Crain with James Hutton as trustee.. On September 15th that year residents voted to erect a wooden cross above the intersection of Clinton Street & Gaylord Avenue to commemorate this event…..On December 1st we set off fireworks at night while viewing Santa Claus through our windows…………….Ten days later we had christened ourselves “Grosse Pointe Woods”……………………………In 1846 when Alanson Cooke became mayor he renamed it “Grosse pointe”………………………………….Today many people still refer to Grosse pointe woods simply as “Grosspointe” or even just “Woods” because that is how it has always been called by those who have lived here since before World War II…..It wasn't until after World War II did people start calling this entire region "the Upper Peninsula" because that's where all these new towns popped up around Lake Superior – Grand Rapids, Battle Creek, Petoskey – etc…..Today Grosspointe woods still calls itself "The Upper Peninsula" but most everyone else refers to it simply as "Michigan." There are several interesting stories associated with Grosse Pointa Woods during its history: 1) The first post office opened in 1840 and remained open until 1862 due to lack of space elsewhere in town. 2) In 1865 local citizens organized themselves into a community fire brigade which helped fight fires throughout town for three years straight! 3) In 1895 local citizens established their own hospital – St Rose Hospital – which continues to be operating today! 4) In 1932 local high school students founded Mackinac College which began operations campus-wide six months later! 5) A special holiday called Christmasfest was celebrated each year from 1938-1941 at Mackinac College due to Intercollegiate Athletic Association (ICAA) regulations forbidding schools from hosting Religious services during academic term
