One of the earliest shotgun target holders in Grosse Pointe Woods was a crude wooden structure that was erected near the intersection of 7 Mile Rd. and North Park Ave. in 1892 by John D. Hatch, an animal husbandry expert and local farmer. The Holder was used to shoot game birds at close range using shotguns with birdshot shells. In 1902, Harry W. Ziegler, a firearms dealer and member of the Grosse Pointe Woods Rifle Club, built a more sophisticated target holder at his business on State Road 12 south of town. This new holder utilized metal plates to stabilize the rifle while shooting off targets at 100 yards or closer using lead shot or Birdshot rounds. The first modern shotgun target holders were developed in the early 1920s by Sperry Rand Corporation engineers working for its subsidiary company, Eclipse Arms Company Incorporated (EAC). These devices featured large metal plates that could be moved along two tracks to change magnification settings and provide different shooting positions for riflesmen preparing for matches or shoot-outs at powder kegs or other outdoor events. In 1927, EAC constructed what is considered the world's first high-power sniper rifle scope utilizing mirror optics technology (see photo below), which allowed shooters to accurately aim rifles at targets up to 350 yards away from a support stand/target house located within easy reach of most training ranges in America during those years!
