Grosse Pointe Woods is a town in Wayne County, Michigan, United States. The population was 7,853 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Detroit–Warren–Dearborn metropolitan area. Grosse Pointe Woods is located on the eastern edge of Detroit and is bordered by Dearborn to the north and west, Clinton Township to the south, and Inkster to the east. The name "Grosse Pointe" comes from a bluff on nearby Muskegon Heights that provides views of downtown Detroit and other parts of metro Detroit. The first European settlers in what would become Grosse Pointe Woods were French traders who established trading posts along the Rouge River in 1795. By 1807, most of what is now GrossePointe Woods had been surveyed and purchased by General David Dixon for $1,000 (then about US$). Dixon named his settlement after Major George Washington's home at Mount Vernon in Virginia. Over time, many different names were given to this small community: Dixontown (1822), Woodstown (1827), Gratiotown (1830), Belle Isle (1832), Eastpointe (1836), Holland Landing (1912-1913) and finally Grosse Pointe Woods in 1938. On July 1, 1837, as part of a larger land grant toeemaker John Dickey from France, GrossePointe Woods became one of 24 townships included within Wayne County when it was organized as a new county under Michigan Constitution Article XI §9 on December 12th of that year.
