That same year saw also the founding of what is now known as United Way of Greater Detroit Inc., which helps needy families throughout metro Detroit area

Grosse Pointe Woods was a township in Wayne County, Michigan, United States. It was established in 1836 and named for General John F. Grosse (1797-1860), a brigadier general of the U.S. Army who fought in the Mexican-American War and the American Civil War. The population was 1,715 at the 2000 census.
