Grosse Pointe Woods, Michigan is a city and the county seat of Wayne County, Michigan, United States. The population was 59,090 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Detroit metropolitan area. The community was founded in 1855 as Grand Rapids Township by linguist and explorer John C. Fremont. Grosse Pointe Woods was officially incorporated as a city on November 3, 1955. The name came from the point where Rouge River flows into Lake Huron before turning east to flow through downtown Detroit. Grosse, who served as military governor of Upper Canada from 1792 to 1802. The first Europeans to visit what is now Grosse Pointe Woods were French traders in 1689. The area was part of the Northwest Territory until 1803 when Ohio became a state and its land became part of Michigan. On July 1, 1805 – four years after Michigan become a state – Grosse Pointe Woods became an incorporated village with a population of about 200 people under the rule of Mayor Joseph Kuehnlein and Postmaster Daniel Biddle. By 1840, Grosse Pointe Woods had over 2,000 residents and began to build up its industrial base as one of America's leading lumber towns. In 1845–46 construction started on what would become known as "The Great Lakes Naval Shipyard" which would play an important role in American naval warfare during World War II. In 1810, Grosse Pointe Woods was a small community on the eastern border of Michigan. It was located in what is now the city of Detroit. The community had a population of about 175 people. In 1827, Grosse Pointe Woods became the first village in Wayne County, Michigan. It had a population of about 150 people. In 1831, Grosse Pointe Woods became part of Oakland Township in Wayne County. In 1850, Grosse Pointe Woods merged with other villages to form the town of Dexterville within Oakland Township. The town of Dexterville was named after General John Custer and his regiment, the 4th Infantry Regiment (Custer's Raiders). The unit fought at Little Bighorn in 1890 and1891.
