Grosse Pointe Woods is located in the U.S. state of Michigan and is a census-designated place (CDP) within the unincorporated community of Grosse Pointe on the Rouge River. The population was 2,609 as of the 2010 census. It is part of the Detroit metropolitan area. The land that became Grosse Pointe Woods was surveyed by John Jacob Astor in 1835 and designated as a township, but no town meeting occurred until 1858 when Jabez Bowen organized a meeting to establish boundaries for what would become Grosse Pointe Township. The first post office opened in 1860 and remained open until it was discontinued in 1877 because of high postage rates. In 1861, lumbermen began to arrive in Grosse Pointe Woods from Saginaw County and other parts of Michigan to set up sawmills and plywoodyards. By 1865, there were ten mills with an aggregate capacity of . By 1890, there were twenty-one mills with an aggregate capacity of . The annexation by Detroit occurred on January 1st, 1837 and soon after became one of the most significant changes in Grosse Pointe Woods' history. At that time,Detroit had become an even more important city than it had been before due to its expanding economy and growing population. With so many people living near downtown (and within easy walking distance), businesses began to move into what were then rural areas outside of Detroit for space and profits sake (the process known as “urban renewal”).
