Grosse Pointe Woods is one of the most affluent communities in Michigan. It has a median household income of $86,739 and a poverty rate of 14%. The first people to live here were German immigrants who came to Preble County in 1814. Grosse Pointe Woods was first settled by Americans on May 15, 1847 when they brought over 350 settlers from Indiana as part of the Michigan Land Grant Act. The community was named for General James Kileadge, who had won fame during the War of 1812 as a commander of British forces near Detroit. At that time Grosse Pointe Woods consisted only of about fifty homes and could only be called a village because it lacked an arms or post office. In 1875, Grosse Pointe Woods became part of Clinton Township which then became one of the most diverse townships in Wayne County with more than eighty different religions represented. In 1991, when Clinton Township was dissolved into two separate counties – Oakland and Livingston – Grosse Pointe Woods became its own municipality with a population size greater than 5,000 people Today’s economy is based on retail sales (factory stores being especially prevalent), health care services (particularly for seniors), aerospace manufacturing (mainly related to defense contractor Lockheed Martin) and transportation (especially car dealerships). However, due to its simplicity and limited range, this type of firearm wasn’t very popular among regular citizens or military personnel until after World War I when they began being replaced by more advanced weapons such as shotguns and assault rifles.
