Grosse Pointe Woods is a small, rural town in Schoolcraft County, Michigan, United States. The population was 527 at the 2010 census. Grosse Pointe Woods is part of the Grand Rapids–Wixom Metropolitan Statistical Area. The village of Grosse Pointe was established in 1872 and was incorporated as a village in 1903. The present-day community of Grosse Pointe Woods was laid out by John Prentice in 1876 and named for Colonel Augustus Griggs, 1st Lt.GENERAL Ulysses S. Grant's aide de camp during the American Civil War. The first post office at Grosse Pointe Woods was established on October 15, 1876, and served until January 3, 1902. The current post office building was built in 1914 and serves as the main Post Office for Grosse Pointe Woods Village which includes portions of the former village of Grosse Pointe and Griggsville townships to the east and south respectively. Grosse Pointe Woods has two schools: one public school district (Grossman-Faulkner) with over 950 students grades K-12; and one private school system (Lincoln Middle School & Academy) with over 100 students grades 7-12. There are also several hundred residents who attend nearby community colleges including Wayne State University/Rossford Campus; Northern Michigan University; Albion College; Eastern Michigan University/Macomb Campus; Western Michigan University/Dearborn Campus; Muskegon Community College/Southfield Campus - all located within driving distance of Grosse Pointe Woods Village limits that include most major retail areas includingFour Seasons Resort Casino ; SuperTarget ; Dick's Sporting Goods Park - home field for many local teams such as Detroit Pistons , Red Wings & Maple Leafs . The name Grosse Pointe (French: "Grand-Prix") comes from two points on the St Clair River: Grosse Pointe Noire (Black Point) and Grosse Pointe Blanca (WhitePoint). The first settlement in what is now Grosse Pointe Woods was made up of French Catholic families who arrived as part of Jesuit mission work in 1794. In 1830, settlers began arriving from Canada with claims to land near what is now downtown Detroit; these people were known as "the Housers". In 1835, a group led by Luther Martin moved to what is today Grosse Pointe Woods from Battle Creek, Michigan and founded the town of Martin's Corners on an acreage they had claimed along Fenton Road east of present day Woodward Avenue. They named their new community after Father Jean-Baptiste Viger, one of their number assigned to preach at Notre Dame de l'Isle-aux-Noix near Detroit. Father Viger had come west during 1817–1818 as part of a missionary effort sponsored by Pope Pius VII and later became headmaster at Notre Dame de l'Isle-aux-Noix School District #2 - which included much of what is now Grosse Pointe Woods - when he resigned his post there on July 1, 1828 after several months due to health concerns related to yellow fever thathad reached Chicago then Allied States before his arrival there on June 25th.(1) Grossepointeville Township was organized September 24th 1837 under its first president Isaac Sennett.(2) The original plat for Grosvenor Heights appears on map dated April 12th 1840(3)(4) . After becoming Union Territory following Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation on January 6th 1863, Michigan lost all its Indian reservations except those within Jackson Township which became Oakland County.(5) On October 16th 1865 General Order 9 issued by Major General John Custer caused all Native American tribes living east or southwest of Genesee River within Jackson Township () to be relocated into newly created Ottawa Co., MI area using forced relocation known as Red Stick removal(6)(7)(8). This event resulted in many years lived among various tribal members without any contact with their ancestral lands ended until large tracts including portions around today's Dearborn Heights located just north sideing I-696 exit ramp off I‑696 are open public property managed by Treaty & Land Management Agency with Tribal consent
