Grosse Pointe Woods is a small city in the U.S. state of Michigan and it is the county seat of Wayne County. The population was 5,822 at the 2010 census. Grosse Pointe Woods is bordered by Macomb County to the east, Oakland County to the south, and Washtenaw County to the west. It covers an area of about 100 square miles (250 km²). The first firearms were made in Grosse Pointe Woods by French-Canadian colonists in 1795. The town's name comes from a point on Lapeer River where a fort was built by General Anthony Wayne during his war with Great Britain in 1812. In 1837, Grosse Pointe Woods became part of Detroit after it was annexed by that city. In 1896, Grosse Pointe Woods became home to America's first ammunition plant when N & W Ammunition Company began making brass rounds for use with shotguns and rifles on Long Island Sound. That company evolved into United States Ammunition Corporation which continued making rounds until 1990 when it merged with Winchester Repeating Arms Company to become Winchester Incorporated. In 1923 it became a city with a population of over 100,000 people before declining to around 50,000 by 2010 due to suburbanization and other factors. Grosse Pointe Woods has three schools: Grosse Pointe High School (grades 9-12), Saint John's Episcopal School (grades 7-9), and St Joseph Catholic School (grades 6-8). There are also two public parks: one on Woodward Avenue about northwest of town center and another on Brush Road west of town center which is home to the old Masonic Lodge No 2 from 1829 when it served as an inn for traders traveling through Wayne County for goods brought downriver from Upper Michigan

The first permanent white settler in what is today Grosse Pointe Woods was Nicholas-Jacques Czarnecki, who arrived in 1795. By 1807, the village of Grosse Pointe had a population of about twenty people. In 1834, the village became a town when it was annexed by Detroit. Grosse Pointe Woods remained a sleepy farming community until World War II when its population exploded due to the mobilization of resources needed for the war effort. The residential population reached over one thousand during the war years, and many civilians were drafted into military service. As more people moved into Grosse Pointe Woods, there began to be an increasing number of cars on the streets and an increased amount of traffic on local highways. In 1957, Grosse Pointe Woods became part of Metro Detroit and experienced rapid growth as residents embraced suburban livingstyle. The decade saw numerous new development projects undertaken throughout the community including Pioneer Square Shopping Center (now One Michigan Place), Northwest Drive (the former routing of Woodward Avenue), and Kilpatrick Park which anchored present day Midtown Boulevard between Woodward Avenue and State Route 904
