Grosse Pointe Park traces its origins back to 1825 when General John Prentice founded what would become Grosse Pointe Township on land that now includes much of present day Grosse Pointe Park.[2] In 1835, GrossePointe Township was organized as part of Wayne County – which would soon become one side effect from during the Great Lakes Rush when many American settlers moved westward seeking new land amid rapidly expanding industry inMuskegon County – but only became part of GrossePointe Park on July 17th 1847 when two townships were merged into one: Eastpoint Township (now Rochelle Heights) eastof town line then Westpoint Township northof line; both townships were named for Captain George Roebling who donated land to form what is now known as GrossePointe Park.[3][4] In 1895, following authorization by Congress through Public Law 622 an act entitled “An Act To Consolidate The Towns Of Rochelle Heights And Westpoint” all three villages were placed under authority Of A Board composed Of Five residents appointed By The Governor At Large With One Vote From Each Village; This board held office Until 1913 When It Was Amended To Include Two Residents From Each Village As Appointed By The Mayor Who Also Holded Office At That Time; This amendment Made It More difficult For Anybody Who Wants To Remove All Three Villages From Their Areas Which Are Now In Other Cities Would Have To Get Approval From Both Villages First And Then Come Back And Appeal To Meekly So Named Judge Edward Haggerty Cause He Said He Wouldn’t Look At Any Case Which Didn’t involve Somesort Of Benefit To The Village Personally But Also Said There wasn’t Enough Evidence Showing That Anyone Else Wanted These areas So They Stayed Put![5][6] In 1925 officials voted 9–0 to name the park after Major General Lemuel Whitehead who had dedicated his life to improving public transportation in Dearborn Heights and Macomb Township He also served as mayor from 1915 until his death in 1922,[7] becoming perhaps more well-known statewide for his role than he ever did locally where he resided until his death at 92 years old[8]; prior to major general whitehead's dedication there had been no such designation given to any park or facility within this community[9]. Following major general whitehead's donation there was much discussion about naming either park after someone from local history or individuals from within our community but no consensus came about who should be honored so eventually "the idea behind giving [the park] its name grew out of pure coincidence".[10][11][12][13][14]

The Hylans built their first home on what are now Maple Avenue (now First Street) between Grand River Avenue and Grand Boulevard. In 1836, James Kapp purchased 1/4 mile (0.8 km) of land north of where Grosse Pointe Park now stands from Dennison to build Cleveland Village with his brother David Kapp as its founder – one of several villages established in this area around this time including Sayre Heights (later renamed Westland), Gratiot Heights, Harper Woods, Brush Hills Village, Greenvale Manor (also later renamed Bellefontaine), White Sands Landing Village and Highland Plains Village. In 1840–41, Grosse Pointe Park became one of ten towns in Michigan to be organized into a county when Huron County was formed from portions of Oakland County following a presidential executive order issued by President James K Polk. At that time it consisted onlyof rural areas east of Monroe Street south to Ionia Road; today most residents are located inside or near downtown Detroit.. The park covers 6 square miles (15 km2). The first European to visit Grosse Pointe Park was Captain George Washington on July 4, 1796 when he and his army stopped at the mouth of the Saginaw River for supplies. Washington's stay marked the beginning of what would become an annual summertime encampment at Grosse Pointe Park for Presidents and their families. In 1807, Congress designated Grosse Pointe Park as a national military reservation to be used by U.S. commanders in chief during peacetime. The Reservation included land that now makes up most of downtown Detroit and much of east Corktown and Midtown neighborhoods on the riverfront. In 1824, President John Quincy Adams designated Grosse Pointe Park as one of six sites along the newly created Great Lakes National Forest system after travelling through it on his way from nearby Syracuse to Ann Arbor to inaugurate it that year. On October 3, 1827, President James Kentshengle announced plans for a new town called "Grosse Pointe" on land donated by General Nicholas Morrell near present-day State Street and Grand Boulevard in Dearborn Heights – roughly where Woodward Avenue meets Cassius Clay Boulevard today – with its own government and school district; this major expansion of Detroit's boundaries took place as part of wider developments throughout Michigan following American independence from Great Britain in 1821. On May 22nd 1865 US troops burned down Fort Gratiot opposite Macklinore Hall after being ordered by General William Tecumseh Sherman to do so as part of his Offensive againstDetroit during the American Civil War (the Battle Of Fort Gratiot).
