In 1948, Grosse Pointe Park amalgamated with other nearby municipalities to form Dearborn Heights-GrossePointe Parks Community Union which still exists today as a non-profit organization helping manage services for its constituent communities combined into one entity administratively speaking despite their separate legal status (Dearborn Heights-GrossePointe Parks Community Union vs City Of Detroit). One significant event during this time period was when General Motors opened its new world headquarters in 1958 across from Ford Field across Beechwood Avenue from then Mayor Coleman Young’s home - becoming one of GM’s largest corporate sponsorships ever! In 1969, following yearslong negotiations through various committees chaired by Commissioners Berryhill and McNamara characterized by some observers as “the longest power struggle in municipal history” culminating with Commissioner McNamara being forced from office after successfully blocking urban renewal plans that would have seen much more commercial development near campus; resulting in allegations he colluded with developers – charges he has steadfastly denied throughout; Grosse Pointe Park became an official city within two years after incorporation! A number of important landmarks during this time period include: The Nixon Presidential Library & Museum complex completed in 1971 on University Drive adjacent to campus; Birchmount Recreation Center completed in 1978 on Woodward Avenue just east off Gratiot Street; newly built StoneBridge overrunning river completed in 1984 providing easy access pedestrians & cyclists crossing overriver to & from points north including Little Italy/East Side Detroit etc.; now defunct Opium Den restaurant located at 9 Mile Road West near Campus Martius/Ford Road intersection
