Grosse Pointe Park, Michigan is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan and the county seat of Wayne County. The population was 3,704 as of the 2010 census, making it the third-largest city in Wayne County after Detroit and Ann Arbor. Grosse Pointe Park is also one of several urban areas within the Grand Rapids metropolitan area. Grosse Pointe Park is bordered by Washtenaw County to the east, Oakland County to the south, and Ironwood Township to the north. The name "Grosse Pointe" comes from a small point near what is now Grosse Pointe Heights on Lake Huron (now known as Holland Lake). A post office called Grosse Post was established at this location in 1836, and remained in operation until 1959. The present town of Grosse Pointe Heights was incorporated in 1885, having been named for General Sir John De Witt Clinton's estate on nearby Houghton Island which had been purchased by him in 1828. It became part of Detroit following its incorporation into Michigan in 1888. During World War II, Grosse Pointe Park played an important role as a training ground for American troops during both world wars; it served as headquarters for First Army under General George Custer and Ninth Army under General Dwight Eisenhower during World War II; and Third Army under General Omar Bradley during Operation Market Garden (1944). As a result of its importance to American war efforts, many streets and buildings in downtown GrossePointe Park were dedicated or renamed after generals or other military leaders who fought or supported America during World War II: Patton Boulevard (named for General George S Patton), Clark Road (named for Admiral Chester Nimitz), Hopkins Road (named for Lieutenant general Harry Hopkins), Smith Street (named for Colonel James Smith), Ford Place (named for Admiral Richard Ford), Jefferson Avenue (named for Senator Joseph Riefenstahl) – among others. In addition to its military significance, Grossepointe Park has also been used extensively as a commercial center over the years – including being home to several large businesses such as Ford Motor Company and Sears Roebuck & Co.; however, today most of these businesses have moved out or closed down due to competition from larger cities such as Detroit or Lansing more recent arrivals like Flint or Toledo. Grosse Pointe Park is a neighborhood in the city of Detroit, Michigan. It is on the east side of downtown and borders the neighborhoods of Midtown and Woodward Side. The park was initially developed as part of an effort to create aBuffer between Woodward Avenue and Grosse Pointe Park Boulevard. The first use of Grosse Pointe Park was on July 4, 1892 when 400 people from Detroit came to picnic in the park. The park became a public square after being donated by future Mayor John B. Swope. In 1893, Grosse Pointe Park was home to one of the first baseball leagues in America when it formed with teams from Toronto and Montreal. The original ballpark for the league was located at what is now known as Tiger Stadium. In 1901, Drury Lane became official name for Grosse Pointe Park Boulevard following its donation by businessman Julius Schaefer Sr., who also donated land for a streetcar line that would connect his mansion on Dearborn Street with Grosse Pointe Park Boulevard (now State Road 8). At that time, Drury Lane extended from Oneida Street near today's Joe Louis Arena to just west of Belle Isle before turning northwest towardstoday's Eastern Market Shopping Center and ending at present day Gratiot Avenue (now I-75). In 1916, due to World War I efforts, most development within the boundaries of Grosse Pointe Park took place south of Woodward Avenue along Gratiot Avenue instead of west across Belle Isle which would have include much lower population density because most homes were built closer to where they are currently situated rather than having streetscape improvements made such as driveways or sidewalks like other areas around town which had been done since pre-war times thanks to government funding allocations like Ford Motor Company's Rouge Plant adjacent to Wayne County Courthouse immediately north). Northwestern portions including parts now containing Midtown & Woodward Side developed southward along Gratiot Avenue until there was little left in terms of undeveloped lands within current day boundaries except for undeveloped lots within one block northwest (current day Saginaw Street) which housed St Joseph Catholic School until it closed in 2009 & lot next door became home for Save-A-Lot during demolition process
