The City of Grosse Pointe Park was founded on October 15, 1892 by residents of the town of Holland and its surrounding villages as a result of land acquisition and annexation by Detroit. Grosse Pointe Park is one of the oldest continuously populated cities in North America. It is bounded on the east by Gratiot Avenue and on the west by John F. Kennedy Boulevard. The community took its name from a point near where Holland Road enters Detroit (now known as Woodward Avenue). When Gratiot was first laid out, it ran along what is now Gratiot Avenue; so when Holland Road acquired title to disputed lands east of that line in 1892, they decided to give their new town's namesake an all-encompassing name: Grosse Pointe Park Township. This became effective November 1, 1893 when township officials met at Hoyt Hall to adopt resolutions establishing boundaries for their new community – including what are now parts of Dearborn Heights and White Oak Township – as well as creating street names such as Masonic Lane (later renamed Gratiot Avenue), Kenilworth Place (later renamed Kalamazoo Street), Blythewood Drive (later renamed Clinton Boulevard), and many more. In 1907, Grosse Pointe Park annexed part of nearby Dearborn Heights; this annexation created another contiguous municipality with a population totaling over 20,000 people today–something that hadn’t happened before in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula! The village that grew up around Grosse Pointe Park developed primarily as a bedroom community for residents near downtown Detroit; however, some people living within Grosse Pointe Park started developing their own businesses and activities outside of village boundaries before 1950. By 1970 only about 10% of its inhabitants lived within Village limits while 90% or more resided in either Downtown Detroit or Metro City (the largest metropolitan area in Michigan).
