The most notable change came during World War II when much of the area around Riverfront Towers became occupied by munitions plants used to produce oil for America’s war effort. This madeGrossePointepark one ofthe most polluted areas inAmericaatthattimeandforced many people out oftheneighborhoodover fearsofpollutionanddamagetotheirproperty.(Ferguson) Later on during the war period other usesfortheareawerediscussed; specificallyitwasproposedtousegalleysin order to createanew harbour on Western Lake Superior inGrosvenor Harbour (now known as Holland Harbor). However this proposal never came to fruition because wartime production stopped before it could be executed properly.(Moses) After WWII ended and factory jobs nationalized following World War II, many residents returned to their homes inGrossePointepark(Laughlin) but continued to deal with pollution caused by factories nearby(Becker). In 1955 however another major development occurred when Chevrolet announced plans to open a manufacturing plant adjacent to Riverfront Tower(Rockefeller Plaza). This announcement set offa race among developers for control over riverfront property throughoutDetroit(Kramer). This race culminated with construction began on Comerica Center which would become one of downtown Detroit’s most iconic structures(Chernoffsky & Siegel). After decades of growth and redevelopment both inside and outside ofGrossePontepark,[4]developmentarounditcompletedin2008anniversaryyearofitsopening.(Hansen)
