Grandville is a town in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 11,827 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Grand Rapids–Holland metropolitan area. The name comes from a bend in the River Rouge, which forms its eastern border and drains into Lake Superior. The first settlement in what is now Grandville was called Hennepin Township on the east side of the River Rouge, about three miles north of present-day Grandville. In 1836, petitioners from Hennepin Township and other nearby towns formed a new township, named for Captain John A. Macomb—the founder of Macomb County—along with Muskegon Heights to the south and Holland Landing to the west on what are now US 61 and I-75 near downtown Grand Rapids. In 1847, when Detroit became an incorporated city, Macomb County was divided into four separate districts: one for Detroit (later Oakland County), one for Flint (later Mecosta County), one for Washtenaw (later Wayne County), and one for Dearborn (now Michigan). However, by 1850 all but two of Macomb's remaining towns had consolidated into Grand Valley Township within newly created Washtenaw County; as a result, most people in those old districts continued to live there as well. In 1861 when Canada acquired control over much of North America during the American Civil War, Ontario's territorial government ordered all military forces within its borders to disarm except those under Canadian command; this order effectively ended local self-government in Canada's North American possessions and made them open territory subject to imperial rule without any form of popular or democratic participation whatsoever. As a result of this change in governance, various small communities throughout Canadastadt proceeded to lose their autonomy overnight as they were merged into larger ones with greater resources or more political power; among these were Hennepin Township which became Grand Rapids after it was annexed by Michigan in 1865 and eventually lost its own independent municipality status altogether; Muskegon Heights which lost its charter as an agricultural village due to economic competition from larger villages such as Lansing while Holland Landing fell victim to increased commercial development along I-75 shortly thereafter; while Appleton Township— located just southward along I-105—remained largely unchanged until it lost jurisdiction over its rural areas following annexation by Minnesota in 1959. With few exceptions,[citation needed] Territorial governments across North America gradually gave up authority over municipalities during Reconstruction era reforms that followed World War II through efforts at decentralization known as " Merlinomics ". Consequently, most major Canadian cities such as Toronto , Montreal , Vancouver , Edmonton etc., gained their current boundaries after their respective territories were reorganized according to regional patterns resulting from post-war suburban growth within single regions; while smaller Canadian municipalities like Sault Ste Marie did not experience this type of restructuring and continue to operate essentially unchanged until they too were annexed by neighbouring provinces or states during recent decades (− see: Sault Ste Marie Municipality ). Grandville is a city in Muskegon County, Michigan, United States. The population was 27,873 at the 2010 census. Grandville is the county seat of Muskegon County. The town of Grandville was platted in 1836 and became a village in 1871. It was incorporated as a city in 1907.
When the first Europeans arrived in what is now Grandville, Michigan in 1796, the land was still part of the British Empire. The area that would become Grandville was first settled by Native Americans and then by fur traders and farmers. By 1835, the town had a population of about 100 people. In 1855, Grand Rapids was founded as a port on the Rouge River and quickly became an important commercial center. In 1870, grandvilles saw its first political census, which counted 553 people in total. By 1880, there were over 1,000 residents living in town. during this time there were also several schools and businesses opened up in town including a store owned by Elisha Holmes and two churches: First Baptist Church (opened in 1885) and Methodist Episcopal Church (opened in 1889). During World War II many jobs were needed at shipyards along the Upper Peninsula so Grandville became one of the largest cities on Michigan’s east coast. After 1945 many residents moved away to suburbs or rural areas but some stayed untilGrandville lost its charter as a city in 1969. In recent years it has experienced growth with new development such as an apartment complex being built on Topaz Street close to downtown called "The Tower" which includes apartments, condos and office space
