The city is the county seat of Wayne County and was founded on July 1, 1837, by David Kellogg and Elijah Howe. It was named after Grand Rapids, Michigan. The first European to visit what is now Grandville was John Jacob Astor in 1824. After his trip to North America he noted that "the tribes which inhabit this country are very numerous and powerful." He also mentioned the long river called the Maumee River which runs through town and forms a boundary between it and Ottawa County to the east. In 1837, David Kellogg petitioned for land from Native American chief Joseph Kippenberger on behalf of his brother-in-law (Kellogg's wife) Anna Maria Wright who had married Kippenberger two years earlier. The grant request included an assessment for road building so that travelers could find their way around the area: "Roads leading hither may be easily constructed according to your EXPECTATIONS; but you have chosen not to build them." Kellogg became one of Gratiot County's first settlers when he purchased 3/8 mile (1 kilometer) southeast of present day downtown Grandville from George Stephenson in 1840 following the purchase of over 12 square miles (30 square kilometers) adjacent to Gratiot Township from Nicholas Biddle in 1840 also following Kippenberger's gift to Gratiot Township totaling 5 acres (2 hectares). In early days there were only five houses in town, all built before 1850 as part as part of a pluralistic society where villages clustered around churches or other religious institutions until development started elsewhere beginning with Factory District growth starting about 1850 followed by military related housing development during World War I resulting in more than doubling the population from just under 10,000 residents in 1914 to nearly 25,000 residents by 1920 primarily due increased availability for workers at Detroit automobile plants although some Grandvilers continued farming into 1930s; even today many people still live within ½ mile (400 meters) radius or less including most recently active downtown areas along Harbor Drive between Third Street northward and First Street westward near Oneonta Marina providing easy access amenities such as supermarkets up close plus excellent public transportation options via buses variousLY operated by GRANDVILES MICHIGAN TRANSPORTATION AUTHORITY

The town of Grandville was founded in 1836 by a group of men who came from the villages of West Branch and Greenbush in the westcentral part of Michigan. The village, which had been established about 1810, was located on the east bank of the Ottawa River, about two miles north of what is now Grand Rapids. The town was named for General George Washington Grandison, who fought in the American Revolution and served as a brigadier general in the Continental Army. The town first grew primarily due to trade with other villages along the river. However, after several decades of growth, manufacturing began to become an important element of local economy. In 1862, when Michigan became a state, Grandville became one of its charter towns. In 1916, during World War I, Grandeville became home to America’s first air base when it opened at East Lansing Municipal Airport. From herefighters flew supplies into France during the war. The airport closed in 1979 but has been repurposed as a park that includes a playground and picnic area.
