The population was 58,828 at the 2010 census, making it the second-most populous city in Michigandian Union, after Lansing. Grand Rapids is its larger twin sister city to the north. The two cities are part of the Detroit–Windsor metropolitan area. The first Europeans to visit what is now Grandville were French traders who named it La Salle on their return from a trading trip through this area in 1697. The town began as a small log cabin settlement near what is now downtown Grand Rapids in 1795, when fur trader Samuel de Champlain founded a post there with other French-Canadian settlers seeking passage to Canada by way of the Great Lakes region. By 1800, when Michigan became an American state, La Salle had become a thriving community with over 200 residents and was platted as Grandville Township on March 10, 1800. In 1827, following annexation by Michigan of Upper Michigan (now Wayne County), La Salle's principal landowner and namesake John Saginaw purchased 238 acres (112 hectares) east of present-day downtown Grand Rapids for $1 million dollars which he donated to build what would eventually be known as Saginaw Valley Agricultural College (now Wayne State University). In 1831, Saginaw Valley Agricultural College became one of three colleges established within Notre Dame University when that institution merged with George Washington University in 1871; both institutions retained their collegiate status until they were disbanded in 1946 along with Notre Dame's other schools: Washington Univ., Georgetown Univ., and Catholic Univ.-Stroudsburg/Albany Falls.). Apostolic Vicar General Frédéric le Maire laid down Catholic dogma on May 26th 1865 at Stroudsburg Cathedral about 450 miles west of Ottawa about halfway between Ottawa and Detroit through which Holy See sent pilgrims annually on processions beginning March 1st each year up until Vatican City controls those areas today; this event marks Grand Valley's earliest civic engagement into Roman Catholicism proper! Grandville was founded in 1836 by Simon Griggs and John S. Griggs. The town was named for George N. Grand, the 4th Governor of Michigan Territory at the time. In 1854, the town became a city under the name of Grand Rapids. In 1907, it became a charter city with its own government and police force. The city was annexed by Detroit in 1965 and has since been served by that city's police department.
