Grandville is a small city in the U.S. state of Michigan, located on the Grand River near its confluence with the Ottawa River. The population was 5,813 at the 2010 census. It is part of Eastern Michigan University District #2 and is included in the Midwestern United States region considered by Census Bureau to have a largely rural character. The first permanent settler in what would become Grandville was James Ketchum, who arrived in 1796. Ketchum's claim to land that now includes much of downtown Grandville was disputed by other pioneers, but he obtained title to it from an Indian chief named Touchwood in 1802. In 1827, John Duryea established a sawmill and gristmill on the river at what is now known as Duryea Street and built one of the first churches in town – which served as a school for children until 1862. The mill closed around 1850; however, it reopened several times over subsequent years before finally shutting down for good in 1886 due to incapacity from age or injury. In 1825-26, George Stephenson erected an ironclad shipyard at Port Huron on the Ottawa River, providing work for local merchants and workers during what would be called "the great Northern war." Stephenson's Ironworks Company also began producing locomotives (initially 2-foot- diameter Forest Products Railway boilers) here in 1829–30; this helped make Grand Rapids possible as a commercial center during America's early steamboat period (1830s-1850s). Steel production picked up after World War II based on advances made at nearby Alcoa plants; aluminum products have since replaced steel as Main Street's most important industry although steel remains a significant minority contributor to GDP growth over time. The post office opened here on November 1, 1865; it became known as "Grand Rapids" after becoming an independent city under charter granted by Michigan Legislature on May 25, 1870 following successful vote by citizens supported by then Governor Augustus Gippius and Mayor Wm Ewing along with contributions from various civic groups including churches and businesses. Asahi Glass Co., Incorporated reached its current location adjacent to Duryea Boulevard/Sheldon Avenue east of downtown Grand Rapids circa 1935 when ownership passed from Geo Matson Jr., grandson of Cleveland Rubber Company founder Geo Matson Sr.. In 1971 AGL merged with Champion Corporation forming United Aluminum Industries Incorporated which has operated continuously since 1991 headquartered within One Hart Plaza (now One Hart Place), Downtown Grand Rapids
