In 1827, Revd Samuel Morse founded Gratiot Academy where he taught school before moving to Ann Arbor to become an engineer for Woodward & Co., later becoming General Electric Company's main Laboratory at Main Street and West Side Avenue in 1837-38 under George Stephenson; he also served as Mayor from 1840–42 In 1835-36 James Denny established “The Denny Brewery” downtown on Main Street; this brewery continues operations today as Third Man Brewery LLC In 1846 John Fenton opened his Nursery Supply Store at Second and Plymouth Streets; this store still operates today as Fenton’s Supermarket On December 15th 1870 United States Post Office moved from Newark to downtown Grand Rapids when that community became a Territorial Territory organized into Michigan Territory Detroit took control over most local government including education during much of this time with GRD serve only as an important financial center for both cities while also providing services such as transportation
