Grand Rapids, Michigan is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan and the county seat of Kent County. The population was 713,505 at the 2010 census, making it the third-largest city in Michigan and the largest city in Wayne County. The first settlement in what is now Grand Rapids was made by Revolutionary War veterans Jean Baptiste Marquette and his partner Pierre Elliott Trudeau on May 12th 1797 following their return from an expedition into Upper Canada. They named their new settlement after George Washington who had helped lead them into Canada during their war effort. It wasn't until 1824 that Jackson Township was organized from parts of Ottawa Township west of US-12 near present day Redford Road/SR 101W and north along SR 16E towards Van Dyke Creek where they built a small log cabin called Priestman Park which served as headquarters for Jackson Township until 1830 when they moved to what is now downtown Grand Rapids due tomudslide conditions caused by Mud Lake forming close to the town center. Jackson Township became part of Kent County on November 1st 1835 when it was approved by Michigan General Assembly under Article IX Section 3 – "That within each township there be created no more than twelve districts; that each district be incompetent unto itself; but that each township may join with any other township or villages thereof in creating a common government." It would not be until 1860 when Lansingburgh Township - then part of Dearborn County - became incorporated into Grand Rapids through an act by Governor Rufus King which authorized the merger because it felt that Lansingburgh could not handle its own affairs without help from Dearborn Countyship so it too would become a part of a larger municipality under one roof like everyone else living within its boundaries! In 1863 when Lansingburgh Township voted unanimously to secede from Kent County over disagreements about taxes and political representation Lansingburgh Heights also voted unanimously seceded from Lansingburgh Township effective February 15th 1863 becoming Ann Arbor according to The Gazetteer Of Michigans Towns And Villages 1861-1863 published by The State Historical Society Of Michigan . It isn't until 1872 when both towns rejoined Kent County through Act No 5587 – An Act To Consolidate And Organize The People Of Dearborn And Livingston Tracts In Peninsula Province Within This State - that we come back full circle back to our original name: Lansingburgh Heights! GrandRapids still uses this name today even though we have since reincorporated into Wayne County!

Harmony established himself near present day Downtown Grand Rapids and organized a militia to protect settlers from Native Americans who were raiding their settlements. The first town meeting held by Harmony's group on January 25, 1814 resulted in the organization of the village of Grand Rapids as well as creation of a committee to manage affairs within it. In 1816, Godfrey Knox foundedKnoxville; he used part of GrandRapids land for his new settlement which becameKnoxville proper. In 1830, John Stephenson founded another small community called Belle Fourche on Ottawa River opposite downtownGrandRapids; this community too failed to thrive due to low population density and lack of transportation options available at that time; however Belle Fourche still remains an important historical landmark today thanks to its unique architecture including one original courthouse building still standing today (pictured below). One early effort towards developing a grandscale town plan for what would become Grand Rapids was made by volunteer surveyors named Hiram Sibley and Jacob Riis who surveyed various tracts along Buffalo Creek between 1850-1853 while working for James Dickey’s Western Land Company headquartered in Milwaukee Wisconsin . Their report provides valuable insight into early plans forGRANDRAPIDS when compared to later designs executed by officials from Chicago , Cincinnati , St Louis , and even San Francisco .
