Grand Rapids, Michigan is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan and the seat of Kent County. The population was 97,463 at the 2010 census. It is the largest city in Kent County and one of its three cities, with a total area of 151 square miles (409 square kilometers). Grand Rapids is also the second-largest city in Michigan after Detroit. The name "Grand Rapids" comes from an early 18th century French phrase meaning "the great harbour." The first permanent European settlers in what is now Grand Rapids were French Jesuits who founded a fur trading post there in 1799. In 1837, Grand Rapids became part of the newly formed Indiana Territory when that territory was created from portions of Michigan and Ohio. The first settler to arrive in what is now Grand Rapids was George Stephenson, who built his wagon train's stop on Hwy 19 about two miles northeast of present day downtown Grand Rapids on July 25, 1837. In 1863, during the American Civil War, General Ambrose Burnside besieged Fort Dearborn near present day Lansing while seeking refuge from Confederate forces advancing toward Detroit. burnside's force included 4 cannons located atop Dearborn's roof which fired upon Union troops as they attempted to enter through an opening high up on the fortification; this action helped set off a chain reaction that resulted in more than 100 casualties for both sides including 13 officers and men killed and over 50 captured]. When Lansing was reunited with its original county government following Michigan's admission into Confederation as a new nation on November 11 th ,1863, it became part of newly organized Kent County within that new government. After years of discussion between Ottawa Township trustees John Ahern (D) and Augustus Kelley (R), on December 1st 1867 they voted 2-1 to adopt the name "Grand Rapids". On February 10th 1870 it was announced by US Govt Commissioner James Kappen(D) that all land east or north of Water Street had been sold to Andrew Stevenson for $10 per acre ($2 per hectare). This gift from Kappen marked not only grand final vindication for townspeople who had lobbied hard for its incorporation but also beginning phases towards developing what would eventually become one of America’s most vibrant industrial centers – home to numerous businesses such as Ford Motor Company (1901), Benetton Corporation (1920), Cadillac Motors & Alloys Company (1928), International Paper Co., DTE Energy Holdings PLC (2018) – just some examples among many others throughout much larger metropolitan areas across North America during late 19th century along riverfronts redevelopment stages….grand rapids today has 6 acres bordering Ionia Park/Northeast Side Boat launch ramp directly across River From City Limits

Grand Rapids, Michigan is a city in the heart of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. It was founded in 1824 by John C. Fralick and his wife, Katherine Ann Keyes. The population was 127,362 at the 2010 census. The city is named after George Washington Carver, who donated land to Grand Rapids for its development. The first Europeans to visit what is now Grand Rapids were French traders and missionaries in 1795. In 1824, John C. Fralick moved from Illinois with his family to take up residence in present-day Grand Rapids on the site of an old trading post he had built known as "The Prairie." By 1830, Fralick's son George had also arrived and started a grocery store on Mackinac Island that became one of the most successful in town. In 1837, Frederick Law Olmsted purchased 640 acres (248 ha) north of present-day downtown Grand Rapids for $10 per acre ($140 per ha). He began developing what would become known as Olmsted Park which included areas that are today Little Italy and First Ward along Saginaw Street between State Street and Gratiot Avenue. As development continued throughout the 1840s and 1850s, new streets were created including Main Street (now Woodward Avenue), Kalamazoo Road (later State Highway 9), Maple Leaf Road (now Middlebelt Boulevard), Hastings Road (now Ford Drive), Belle Plaine Road (now Ionia Boulevard), and most importantly Waterfront Rd., later renamed Harbor Dr., which runs along both sides of Lake Michigan from Holland Landing upstream until it joins it at Wabash Ave./Wabash Bridge downstream near Harbor Dr./Wabash Bayou
