From 1868 through 1967, Grand Rapids experienced an industrial revolution with heavy reliance on manufacturing for its economy until declining production due to automation began to offset some growth over that period; however this reversed beginning in the late 1970s when manufacturing resumed as more jobs were created in information technology fields such as software development and internet companies such as Microsoft/Intel etc.). By 1840, many residents had moved to what would become downtown Grand Rapids due to its strategic location near major trade routes emanating from Michigandania across Lake Huron and into Canada via Mackinac Island; this area today includes much of downtown except for some blocks near State Street which are still occupied by warehouses used by Northwest Airlines fly out terminal facilities until recently). In 1847–48, construction began on Gratiot Avenue (later renamed Main Street), which became one ofGRAND RAPIDS' earliest main thoroughfares running north/south from downtown toward Eastern Market (now Midtown).
