On July 25, 1814 – Independence Day – General Kiefer ordered all settlers west of MI 35 to leave their homes immediately or face punishment; however, most did not heed his order and continued to reside within present-day Grand Rapids limits. On October 10th following General Kiefer's death at Fort Recovery – which occurred while under orders from Great Lakes Command Headquarters – all residents east of MI 35 were ordered to leave their homes and head north towards Sault Ste Marie where they would be accommodated by units besieging that city at that time under command of Major General David Banks | Bendix | Barton | USN| later governor general of Canada during Confederation. When news arrived back home about General Kiefer's death at Fort Recovery – coupled with reports that British forces were marching southward towards Sault Ste Marie alongMI 36 towards Ottawa carrying supplies needed for an impending attack on Detroit – some local citizens decided to abandon their homes in search for safety before turning around and returning home once again | Many early pioneers including Captain John Denton went into exile rather than return home during this time period due to religious objections to warfare being waged against God's chosen people... locals refers to those days prior to 1840s as “the dark ages” when many fearless individuals chose isolationism out Of respect For our Ancestors Who Suffered At The Hands Of Redcoats In less than two weeks following General Kiefer's death at Fort Recovery - leading up To Canada Confederation on July 1st 1867 - over 60% OF THE COUNTY EXISTED AS A RESIDENT COUNTY WHEN WASHINGTON STREET WAS NAMED FOR JUST GORDON WILSON ROAD IN MEMORY OF GENERAL KRIFFER--THIS WAS ALSO THE DAY THAT NEW JERSEY COME INTO CONFederation & MICHIGAN BEING CLAIMED BY THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA As ITS FIRST STATE--IN ADDITION TO ITS ORIGINAL TOWARD EAST PROVINCE OF HOGANSKIRK--AND GRAND RAPIDS

Grand Rapids has a rich history dating back to 1847 when its first settler, George Beal, bought 640 acres of land east of the present day downtown area. The townspeople began to build homes around what is now downtown in 1851, and by 1865 they had erected a few wooden buildings on present day Front Street. In 1871, Beal's nephew John Denny bought 1,600 acres (5 km²) of land just west of downtown for $10 per acre. This became known as "Denny's Farm". Denny started growing corn andbeans there until his death in 1901. By 1907, there were about 30 houses in downtown with four businesses active: two banks and one store. That year work began on building what would become Grand Rapids' first high school; it opened in 1911 as Dearborn High School. In 1936 the city passed an ordinance prohibiting billboards larger than 20 feet (6 m) wide or 10 feet (3 m) high without prior written consent from both property owners and the municipality. This ordinance was repealed by voters in 1941 but reinstated by then Mayor Seward Coleman after he won re-election that year as mayor against incumbent John O’Brien with more than 60% of the vote. After World War II ended, large numbers of veterans brought their families to live and work in Grande Rapids – many new hotel/motels were built along Front Street during this time period including Renaissance Hotel & Casino which opened its doors on July 12th 1948 becomingMichigan's first casino operator - making GrandeRapids one of Michigan's most popular tourist destinations for years to come! By 1960GR had reached its current size with over 100,000 residents living within boundaries established by law at that time including almost all of Downtown except for portions located northward on Third Avenue between State Street and Park Avenue forming part of Midtown Detroit whose boundaries also changed following federal civil rights legislation enacted during that decade resulting mostly from neighborhood protests led by Dr.(Dr.) Martin Luther King Jr., who resided near Midtown Detroit at 4500 Woodward Ave.. At this point GR also included much rural territory lying east/southeast of Interstate 90 stretching south into Indiana County including parts of Battle Creek Township as well as portions bordering Saginaw Valley Province within former Stroudsburg Township proper - thus making it one contiguous community rather than 2 separate municipalities embracing different cultural regions! .....On January 17th 1969 GR City Council approved resolutions establishing MLK Jr.'s historic home behind 4500 Woodward Ave BEHIND HIS OWN HOME AS A National Historic Landmark - thus marking not only grnrdevals such as African American access to education & housing opportunities here but also Dr.(Dr.)King's impact nationally & internationally!!
