Grand Haven is a city in Midwestern United States. The population was 38,928 at the 2010 census. The city is the county seat of Allegany County and is part of the Detroit–Warren–Ann Arbor Metropolitan Statistical Area. In 1837, Grand Haven became the first American town to be founded on the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. It had a population of 905 in 1840, but declined due to freezes and other problems during the Great Lakes region's cold snap. However, it grew rapidly from 1850 to 1870 thanks to an influx of German immigrants and their children who had settled in what is now Kalamazoo County after fleeing religious persecutions in Germany. Among these newcomers were Friedrich Wilhelm Cram (1817-1892), a Prussian immigrant who played an important role in developing local transportation systems, as well as his brother Julius Cram (1820-1900). During its heyday, Grand Haven was one of largest cities in Michigan with over 30,000 residents. In 1875, when it became apparent that Indiana was going to secede from Michigan due to disagreements over slavery and voting rights, Grand Haven joined with other towns along the Lower Peninsula in supporting Indiana's cause and formed the "Michigan National Union" which helped lead to the American Civil War. Aftermath saw large numbers of Germans leave for America during that conflict; by 1880 only about 10% remained within what is now Allegany County. However, many families did stay behind because they were unable or unwilling to emigrate again during wartime conditions; many businesses thrived while others went bankrupt due largely to shortages caused by war production restrictions. Despite this rough patch period following World War I (the war resulted in millions being forced out across North America), Grand Haven continued experiencing rapid growth until 1925 when Prohibition began taking hold across much of America – including Michigan – limiting economic opportunities for many low-income citizens who depended on alcohol sales for income. With prohibition came organized crime and social unrest that led some people heretofore unknown quantities such as bootlegging gangs into being active; at one point even entire neighborhoods were controlled by rival gangs vying for control over lucrative business interests and illicit profits generated from smuggling booze into states like Ohio through tunnels under Lake Superior. Although prohibition ended exactly 50 years later in 1991 (!), this didn't stop organized crime groups from continuing their activities today – particularly around downtown Grand Haven where several high-rise buildings still stand vacant after years of use as illegal brothels/strip clubs/etc..
