It has a humid continental climate with cold winters and hot summers. The first Europeans to visit what is now Grand Haven were Indian traders from the Ottawa region in search of fur trade goods. In 1797, French trader François Poulin set up a trading post on the mouth of the Eel River near present-day downtown Grand Haven. The town was founded by 1800 settlers from Holland who had migrated to what is now Michigan during that decade as part of an effort to found new settlements in the area after seeing land that would be available for farming after being completed by General John Forbes's explorations in 1802. In 1805, Governor Semen Zaloga ordered Captain John Beaulieu to establish Fort Dearborn on Wexford Island (now Harbor Beach) within reach of Detroit so that British troops could be safely evacuated should any hostilities erupt with Canada over control of Upper Michigan following Napoleon's invasion of Europe in 1804. George Stephenson became associated with this project when he joined Beaulieu on board HMS "Grinnell" while working on other aspects of Project Niagara in summer 1813, later becoming engineer at Grinnell Arsenal where Stephenson developed his steam locomotive design. The first carriages were built by American manufacturer Morse & Co., using parts brought over from England under lease from Canadian contractor Robert Stevenson Ltd.. By 1816, stone barriers had been erected along both sides ofriver so that vehicles could not enter or exit without permission; only pedestrians could cross at high water levels controlled by lock gates located upstream beneath present-day First National Bank Building on State Street Bridge across river. When Detroit became an American city in1801, it imported goods needed for its construction projects such as brick and mortar, iron ore, timber and other materials used in building streets and buildings – items unavailable until then outside Lansing due to geography or shipping restrictions placed upon non-native Americans living east of Mackinac Island Sound.
