Grand Haven, Michigan is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan and the county seat of Allegany County. The population was 97,898 at the 2010 census, making it the largest city in Allegany County by population. The city is adjacent to Kalamazoo and Battle Creek in southeast Michigan and is bordered by Muskegon Heights to the east, Hillsdale to the south, Saginaw Township to the north, and Oakland Township to the west. The first humans living in what is now Grand Haven were brought over from Europe about 12,000 years ago. Their original village was located on what is now Washtenaw Avenue near Southport Boulevard today's Old National Bank building which still stands as an industrial landmark. In 1795 Grand River formed as a result of several treaties between Great Britain and France; it became known as part of British Upper Canada until 1815 when it reverted back to French control under the Treaty of Ghent following Napoleonic Wars. In 1824 US territorial boundaries were expanded with Lake Superior being ceded; this included most of present-day Allegany County including Grand Haven along with much of Holland Patent including Iron Mountain (now Pere Marquette University). In 1830s two new towns were established on both sides of Mackinac Island just off its southern coast: Rockford on one side and Sandusky on another side near modern-day Bay City though they never reached a full size due to competition from larger cities such as Detroit or Toledo across their respective regions. It wasn't until 1854 that all three settlements merged into one - becoming called "Grand Rapids". At this point it was determined that Rockford should be designated county seat while Sandusky would serve as second county seat because they had more people per square mile than either Lansing or Grand Rapids did at that time (. Rockford remained as county seat until 1913). By 1870 there were over 100 residents living in downtown Grand Rapids - more than any other incorporated municipality within US borders at that time (). As industry boomed during World War II many factories opened up throughout town giving rise to some very intense economic development which continues up through today thanks in large part to Michigan Military Base property holdings which have allowed for continued redevelopment since then. One local business dynasty has been responsible for numerous important Municipal expansions such as water treatment plants (Merrill Hydro) starting out small but eventually growing into one of Americas leading providers with multiple plants around world., light rail construction (Metro Transit), casinos (Hollywood Casino), professional sports teams (University Red Wings Hockey Team), retail stores (Lansing Mall), office buildings (Downtown Tower) and biotechnology companies such as Genzyme/Boehringer Ingelheim/Stem Cell Technologies etc..
