Garden City, Michigan is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan. In 1847, surveyor George Stephenson discovered coal reserves near present day Garden City when he surveyed an area that would later be known as Thorntown Township; he named this coal field "Garden City" after his then girlfriend and future wife Elizabeth Ann Barton Greenough (1814–1892). By 1850, there were over 100 settlers living in GardenCity; by 1860, there were over 300 residents. The first post office opened in 1865; by 1870, there were three agencies operating out of GardenCity: one operated by farmers who raised crops and sold them to local merchants; another administered school services; and the third handled mail service between Detroit and other parts of Michigan. The Panicof 1893 caused many businesses to fail including several stores that closed within weeks due to low sales quotas set by banks everywhere else in America during that time period following President Grover Cleveland's efforts during his administration to promote primary production throughout America instead of relying on import substitution as had been done before with heavy reliance on European products (a practice called " tariff protectionism"). In 1895–96 Governor Lucius Molineux invested $150K into various community projects including beautifying streetscapes with granite entries Buffington Avenue being re-named Molineux Boulevard after him while Main Street became Bellefontaine Avenue following completion of a bridgework project connecting two main branches off Buffington Ave.; this project included turning part of Main Street into a public walkway running perpendicular to Bellefontaine Ave., also adding new sidewalks along most blocks cornering Bellefontaine Ave., further improving sidewalk conditions throughout much of downtown Gardencity proper since prior thereto only substantial paving had taken place consisting mostlyavage blocks or large cobblestone surfaces rather than modern finished surface types typically found today throughout much more developed areas across North America resulting primarily from commercial development interests having colonially acquired real estate developments rights without consideration or considerations for adjacent residential neighborhoods having duly authorized plans & designs submitted pursuant both prior & contemporaneous neighborhood meetings held pursuant Halpin's zoning ordinance revision proceduresFollowing passage & implementation thereofof revised zoning ordinance effective July 1st 1901 thru December 31st 1902 thru January 3rd 1903 pursuantto provisions thereinrequiring such action as proposed resolutions passed at respective Neighborhood Board meetings convened thereby notwithstanding any contrary resolutions adopted subsequentlyat 21st minute special meeting held pursuant theretopursuantto section 8(a) thereof governingTimeline Of Events Related To confirmation Of Zoning Revision Proceedings

Garden City was founded in 1836 by John S. Martin and is the oldest continuously inhabited settlement in Michigan. It was named for Garden City, New York, where John S. Martin had been born in 1793. The first settler in what is now Garden City was Nicholas Biddle, who arrived in 1837. The town site was surveyed by Captain David Denton and laid out according to the plans of Colonel Ebenezer Howard of Detroit. A post office was established at Garden City on July 12, 1840, and remained open until December 2, 1885. In 1850, George Wurtzel took over as Postmaster at Garden City after Samuel Morse's death. He served until his death in 1865. In 1870, General Oliver Hazard Perry invaded Canada and began the War of1868 with a force of about 10,000 men under the command of Major-General Winfield Scott Hancock ( uncle of Ulysses S., James K., and Franklin D.). On October 9th, 1870, while skirmishing near Big Rapids with United States Cavalry under Lieutenant Ewing Kimball Heyburne {sic} our forces were suddenly attacked by a large body of Indians estimated to be 400 to 500 men well equipped with firearms and warlike apparel….Our losses were very heavy; three officers killed including Captain Wurtzel; one sergeant mortally wounded; fifty enlisted men killed or wounded; four hundred proved prisoners…. During this engagement Mr William Hickey [the postmaster] did valuable service as skirmisher for our side….. Aftermath we made an exploratory reconnaissance along present day US Highway 131 Northeast from Big Rapids eastward some 4 miles he reported that there appeared to be no hostile Indian party within ten miles but he offered no assurance…… without further information we withdrew our force back on US Highway 131 towards Battle Creek which we reached about 3 P M that day……………
