In 1870, J C Hargrave started construction on a sawmill which would soon become one of the largest mills in Northern Michigan. The mill became an important economic center for many years and helped contribute to growth in nearby towns such as Northville and Battle Creek. It also produced lumber which was used to build homes and businesses throughout central Michigan until it closed its doors in 1984. During World War II, many local farmers joined forces with federal government troops to help provide food for soldiers stationed abroad. In 1945, President Harry S Truman issued Order No 301 giving approval for use of property within striking distance of Detroit Municipal Airport as a landing field for military planes transporting supplies over United States airspace from Europe into Canada or Mexico during wartime). This area became known as “GardenCity” because so many plants were needed for aircraft construction (the airport has since been demolished). Today, there are few buildings remaining from those days but it’s easy enough to see how an agricultural community could grow up around an airport – with miles of roads leading down to it from rural areas all around! In 1907, Garden City became an incorporated municipality. On July 1, 1922, it merged with neighboring Holland to form a larger city known as "Garden City–Holland". The first settler in Garden City was John Riegle who moved from Duluth Minnesota in 1868 and bought land near what is now the small business district downtown. He built a log cabin and named it "Riegle's Harbor" after himself and his brother-in-law Augustus Sherman (1820-1894). In 1872 two brothers, George and Samuel Goodspeed purchased some of Riegle's land from him and began to farm it. They named their new village "Goodspeedville" after themselves. In 1907, when Mackinac Island passed under federal jurisdiction for military purposes due to its strategic location between Detroit and Chicago Lake Superior shorelines, GardenCity became one of many communities affected by the transfer including Holland (now unincorporated), which also lost its municipal status; both villages were placed within Wayne County instead of within Mackinac Island government until 1959 when they regained their municipal status through annexation into Grand Rapids Township as part of that township's growth following statehood. The city has since grown significantly thanks to population growth in nearby areas such as Grand Rapids Township (the surrounding rural area retains much vestigial Native American heritage) while still maintaining its close knit community feel with farmers markets Downtown Saturday mornings during summer months serving fresh fruits/veggies/breads etc., golf courses located throughout the city limits & multiple parks which are popular destinations for locals & visitors alike especially during springtime when wildflowers become available
