Garden City, Michigan was founded in 1854 as a small town on the banks of the Lapeer River. The town grew rapidly during the early 1800s and by 1860 it had reached its present size. Garden City was incorporated as a city in 1903. In 1925, the city became part of Wayne County.
Garden City is an unincorporated community in Muskegon County, Michigan, United States. It is located on the east side of Muskegon River. At the 2010 census, its population was 153 people. The area that now Garden City was first settled by Europeans in 1836 when they built a log cabin on the banks of the river. The name Garden City was given to the community because it had a garden frontage on Washington Street in downtown Muskegon Heights. In 1839, John Hays arrived from Illinois and started practicing law in Garden City. He became known as one of Michigan's most successful lawyers and served as district attorney forMuskegon County from 1851 to 1861. In 1871, Adam Clayton Powell purchased land near present-day Garden City from John Sennett for $10 per acre. Powell planned to build a small town around his new property but never did so due to financial problems. In 1901, Augustus SaintJohn donated land along the north bank of the river between what are now Park Avenue and Whitehall Road in Garden City for use as a parkland reservation. The original park was called SaintJohn Park and remained open until 1967 when it was replaced by nearby Midtown Park. This donation also included part of what is now Midtown Drive which runs parallel to the river south of where SaintJohn Park used to be located and connects with Whitehall Road today. For many years it lay fallow because no one wanted to develop it; however, over time some developers decided that this would be an ideal location for another shopping center which would eventually become Midtown Center mall).

American Colonel John Cushing developed what is now known as the Cushing Holster which allowed troops on horseback to utilize handguns without ever having them visible on their person; however, this innovation was not widely adopted due to its bulky design and complex system requirements. Garden City, Michigan was founded in 1836 by John James Gardener. The city is located on the eastern edge of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and is bordered to the north by Huron County and to the east by Lake Superior. Garden City became a rural community after World War II when suburban growth developed around it. The population of Garden City peaked at over 20,000 in the 1960s but has decreased since then as more people have moved into suburbs outside of town. Today, Garden City is a small town with a population of under 10,000. The city was founded on land that had been used for hunting, fishing, farming, and trapping since before European settlement. In 1836, John James Gardener purchased 2OO acres from the Ottawa Indians in what would become Garden City. Gardener named his new community Garden City after himself because he thought its beauty would make it attractive to other settlers who might want to move there. The first settler in Garden City was Elihu Hubbard who arrived in 1840. In 1842, Alexander McMurtry built the first schoolhouse in what would become Garden City. By 1850, there were six schools operating within sight of each other in what is now downtown garden city. In 1851-52, local farmers set up an experimental farm near modern day Park Avenue/Michigan Avenue which conducted experiments such as growing corn without pesticides or herbicides and raising horses without having them killed for food (this experiment failed). In 1865-66 surveyors laid out lots for individual residences within what are today Downtown and Midtown Garden Cities; these lots were sold at public auction on November 15th and 16th 1865 by Jno Haggerty Jr., one ofGRAND MASTER MICHIGAN VILLAGE MANAGEMENT SETTLEMENT OFFICERS COMMISSIONER
The city of Garden City was founded in 1867 by John P. Morton and his wife, Lillie. The first post office opened in 1870, and the town was named for Mrs. Morton's childhood home in nearby St. Joseph Township. The first store began operation in 1874. In 1886, the city became a part of Lansingburgh County; however, it remained a separate municipality until 1907 when it merged with the adjacent city of Lansingburgh to form one consolidated municipality under the name of Garden City/Lansingburgh.
