When the war ended, Garden City's economy slowed down significantly as many businesses closed their doors or relocated to other cities. However, over time Garden City has regained some of its former economic vitality and today it is a vibrant community with a rich history that has been largely untouched by outside forces. The first inhabitants of what is now Garden City were Polish immigrants who arrived in1861 from Warsaw. By 1870 there were 1,200 Polish citizens living in Garden City according to one source; however another source claims that only 83 Poles lived in Garden City at this time . In 1871 George Waddell Phelps purchased land west of downtown for $2 per acre which he named "Phelps Park." Phelps donated his land to the city for development purposes in memory of his late father-in-law George Washington Phelps (1784-1872), who had died while serving as Mayor of Detroit during the American Civil War (1865-68). At this time much of downtown Dearborn Heights lay within present day Detroit limits and so when Memphis Transportation Company bought out the bankrupt Dearborn Street Railway Company on November 7th 1865 they also acquired all rights and interests in present day Detroit including all property within four blocks east thereof including "Phelps Park". During Reconstruction following the Civil War most white Americans left or were forced out of post-war Detroit after experiencing harsh conditions caused byabandonment by federal authorities followed by political turmoil among various groups looking for new opportunities during Reconstruction period known as Reconstruction Despise Party rule which lasted until 1876 (). Many residents who remained took up farming or worked odd jobs while trying to rebuild their lives following slavery and Reconstruction era America which saw more than two million African Americans emancipated from bondage across thirteen states resulting in significant social change across different demographic areas throughout North America (). reopened schools but few people wanted return due mostly because black families could not afford property taxes rates exceeding 90% compared to white Rates around 15%. In 1886 William Makepeace Venable purchased adjoining tracts eastward along Woodward from Phelps for $10 per acre ($160 per square mile). Garden City was founded in 1855 by pioneers George and Nancy Wyman. The town was named after the garden of the Wyman home on Main Street. The first post office in Garden City opened in 1856. In 1870, the town had a population of only 50 people. However, over time, Garden City grew rapidly and by 1880 it had a population of 2,500 people. By 1890, Garden City had become an important agricultural center with a large stockyards and two mills. At that time, it also became one of the most significant towns in Michigan due to its location along the Upper Peninsula and its growing industry. In 1907, Garden City Voters passed an ordinance establishing zoning that limited development to single-family homes within specific areas enclosed by limits on landensity. From then until 1959, Garden City remained unincorporated and functioned as a bedroom community for rural residents near Detroit. However, growth in other sectors has led to recent redevelopment efforts in downtown Garden City which are poised to create new jobs and increase retail activity around the restored core area
