Garden City is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan and the home of the Garden City Arsenal, a post-Civil War munitions depot that was the largest arsenal in America for over fifty years. The arsenals were closed in 2009, but have been preserved as part of the nearby Thompson Arsenal National Historical Park. The first gun cleaning facility in Garden City was built by Wm. Aiken and Son on White Street between 1855 and 1861. It consisted of two rooms with an oven and a washing machine, each capable of cleaning six guns per day. Aiken also built a third house on Main Street between 1862 and 1863 to serve as the works' storage area for weapons brought into town from surrounding villages. In 1865, Wm. Jourdan opened his own business at 5 South Washington Street which became known as Jourdan's Guns Cleaning Service until 1893 when it merged with Haskins Brothers Cleaners to become Haskins Gun & Knife Cleaning Company Ltd.. In 1898, George Sibley bought out Haskins Brothers and changed its name to Sibley & SonsGun Shop Incorporated (later renamed Sibley's Sporting Goods). In 1903, John Cavanaugh opened his own shop at 226 North State Road which became known as Cavanaugh's Armory until 1907 when it merged with Fenton Manufacturing Co., Inc., one of several local businesses that formed Fenton Industries Corporation (FICO), one of four major American industrial conglomerates at the turnofthecentury; other members included Ford Motor Company (1901), Rockefeller Standard Oil (1902), and DuPont de Nemours & Co.(1903). At its peak, Fenton Industries Corporation employed some 4500 people across forty-six plants located throughout twenty-eight states including Detroit, Cleveland, Buffalo Niagara Falls, Scranton/Wilkes-Barre/Hzelingen (now Wilkes Barre/Scranton/Wilkes-Barre), Syracuse New York City, Yonkers NY(1899), Newark NJ(1920) Hartford CT(1921) Bridgeport CT(1922) Youngstown OH(1923) Indianapolis IN(24). From 1903 through 1949 Fenton Industries Corporation produced more than 1 million firearms articles including pistols (except revolvers), rifles*, shotguns*, handguns*, ammunition* [*excluding black powder], bullet cases(*except rifled rounds*) *and finished products such as carriages*.* *The production site at 6200 East Jefferson Road is now inactive.]

On January 1st 1909 it became an unincorporated community again because so many people wanted incorporation but no one applied for incorporation so it reverted back to being an unincorporated community on October 1st 1909 until 1925 when it finally attained city status again.* During World War II Garden City served as an important military base due to its location near Saginaw Bay which facilitated transportation for munitions production across Midland Counties* * Although not all citizens joined in support during World War II due mainlyto economic reasons (most residents were agricultural workers) GardenCity has made significant contributions both through civic activism and memory culture throughout post-war America
