After arriving in 1836, Nevin named his settlement after himself – Garden City ( pronounced gah-nard-kuh). Nevin had long desired to settle on the east side of the Mackinac River where he could find valuable fishing resources. He arrived at what is now Garden City on July 4th, 1836 – well before any other settlements were established in this area. At first glance, it may appear that little changed about life in these early days until around 1840 when farming began to take hold as a primary industry. However, due to numerous natural disasters that struck throughout this period including several hurricanes that struck Lake Huron between 1840-1845 (a time which is still referred to as “the great watershed”), agriculture did not grow significantly until more recently whenroads were constructed connecting various villages throughout Upper Michigan with larger markets outside of Detroit or Buffalo - opening up new opportunities for farmers hereabouts. There are many stories associated with Captain James Nevin and his townspeople during this early era; some have been perpetuated through oral tradition while others are documented through records dating back to 1876! One such story concerns an incident that took place during construction of a local road near present day Crystal Beach Boulevard: The men working on the project were so busy making progress that they failed to notice when water started flowing downhill quickly from a nearby waterfall! When they finally stopped work because they thought it was just another rainstorm drenching them instead of downstream danger ahead, they found themselves stranded overnight at bottom of the falls; their only chance was if someone could get down there AND rescue them! Needless to say, their ordeal didn’t endear them much with locals who considered them drunken fools! Captain James Nevin would later be mentioned multiple times within documents related thereto; for example,. In 1875 he donated land adjacent to Crystal Beach Boulevard for development into what eventually became downtown Garden City proper - making him oneof very few individualsto donate property specificallyfor Urban Development purposes within our current boundaries today! This act helped lay down roots for future generations by establishing infrastructure necessary forcommerceand population growth - all without ever havingto leave his home country!!! "Navin's gift." Garden City, Michigan was founded in 1887 by James G. Gardiner and his wife Anna. The city was named for the Garden of Eden which is located in present-day Detroit. The couple started a small farm and nursery in what is now the downtown core of Garden City. In 1895, they opened what is now the Garden City Post Office. The first garden show took place at their home on Elm Street in 1897 and featured local exhibitors from across the United States. In 1906, Gardiner purchased the land that makes up today's Garden City Township from John Fenton. The township was organized on July 1, 1907 under the jurisdiction of Oakland County. In 1916, Gardiner became president of Chrysler Corporation and resigned from his position as president of Garden City to run for office as a Republican candidate for Michigan governor. He won with 73% of the vote against incumbent Frank Vanderlip. In 1922, Gardiner purchased land east of town from Jock Mahoney to form what is now Midtown Business Park and donated it to the community in memory of his late wife Anna Gardiner Mahoney. In 1933, he founded Midtown School District No 2 which included much of today'sMidtown area including parts of Garden City Township and Midtown Business Park

In 1898, Garden City became the capital of Michigan. In the 1930s, Garden City experienced a large population growth due to its importance as a munitions manufacturing center during World War II. The economy of Garden City declined in the 1970s and 1980s as factories closed down and jobs were lost in the automotive Manufacturing region.
