The town became a center for lumber, cattle, and grain production during the mid-19th century. In 1865, Garden City was renamed Lansing because of its location on the east bank of the river Lapeer. During World War II, Garden City became an important military base due to its strategic location on the key Battle of Isherwood Ridge. The population declined during the decades following World War II but has grown steadily since then. Garden City was founded in 1824 by farmers and fur traders. The area now known as Garden City was first settled by the Potawatomi Indians. The first white settler in Garden City was James Morgan, who arrived in 1825. In 1827, a group of Englishmen set up a trading post near the present day intersection of Michigan Avenue and Main Street. The post served as a stop on the India Mail route from Detroit to southern Ontario. In 1830, Garden City became part of what is now the United States state of Michigan. In 1833, Garden City's first school was established. The town grew rapidly after it became known for its fertile land and good water supply. By 1840, Garden City had over 200 residents and had started to build roads and houses. In 1847, John Sutherlin bought land in what is now Garden City from the Potawatomi Indians. He began to build a home here that would become one of America's most famous homes – Sutherlin House). Sutherlin also founded the city's first bank – the Bank of Garden City – which still operates today. By 1850, parts of nearby towns such as Troy were growing too large for GardenCity to support alone; so in 1850, Sutherlin hired Jethro Gibbs (a lawyer from Ann Arbor) to help him merge his two towns into one larger community called "GardenCity". It should be noted that at this time there wasn't yet any concept or term used today to describe modern-day Detroit – only "GardenCity" existed then! The merger didn't go well – many people within both communities felt they were being taken advantage of by their new overlords (Sutherlin & Gibbs). So on July 1st 1850, eachcommunity voted independently on whether or not they wanted to break away again and form their own separate city! This vote failed 2-1 with Gibbstown continuing as an independent city under Jethro Gibbs name while Gardendale reverted back to its original name: "Gardendale". However these split moments in history don't end there – due largely to misunderstandings caused during this time period between different groups living within these neighborhoods/townships….. things would eventually spiral outof control……….
