Fraser was founded in 1867 by George Fraser and his family of Scottish immigrants as a small community on the banks of the Peshtigo River. In 1902, Fraser became a city when it amalgamated with Battle Creek. The town's economy is based primarily on agriculture and manufacturing. The local mills have closed down but some remain in use today such as Menard Manufacturing Company which makes flour, feedstocks for ethanol production and other products, as well as plumbing and roofing supplies. Fraser is a small town in Muskegon County, Michigan. The population was 727 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Lansing–Muskegon Metropolitan Statistical Area. Fraser has been a local government since 1868 and is governed by a village board. The village is named for John Fraser, an early settler and mayor of Muskegon Heights. The first permanent white settlers in what became Fraser were David Forbes and his family, who arrived on horseback from Canada in 1824. They built a log cabin on the east side of the river near present-day Wishram. A year later, they began to erect frame buildings in what would become their settlement. David Forbes died in 1826 and his wife took over running the farm with their five children: Margaret (born 1825), John (born 1830), George (born 1833), Anna (born1835), and Alexander (born1838). In 1840, Josephine Morse moved to Fraser from Ilion Township because she wanted more space to raise her eight children free from persecution by her parents’ Native American Indian husband. She built a two-story white house on land that now includes much of the downtown area today; it still stands as one of the town's most recognizable landmarks. The Morse family left Fraser soon after she married Alfred Stroud, an American Revolutionary War veteran and fur trader whose business ventures ranged across Upper Michigan before he settled in Muskegon Heights in 1798 as part of what would eventually become Fraser Village; Alfred Stroud served as its first postmaster until his death in 1865. By 1850, there were only three houses remaining in town proper: those belonging to David Forbes & Family, Josephine Morse & Family, and Alfred Stroud Jr., all dating back to prior pioneer times or earlier versions of Fraser Village which had grown up around them according to recollections from various community members over time - some oral history even predates written records! In addition many other structures such as barns/outbuildings/cabinets etc had come into use during this timeframe including plows being dragged behind wagons down Main Street past current day intersections crossing Beaver Creek then turning right onto main road now known as Hastings Road for example
