In 1862, he married Jane McLaughlin and became known as "Mr." McLaughlin's Land Company".

During Prohibition years later (1929-1939), many businesses located near Fraser came into conflict with prohibitionists who disapproved of alcohol sales within certain limits set by law. This led to several fistfights betweenbusinesses and police officers that were often reported on local newspapers. In 1945, after more than 50 years of continuous growth and development at Fraser-Macksburg Airport®, latterly known as "Fraser Municipal Airport", the airport closed due to low traffic levels combined with changes in travel patterns resulting from improvements made at nearby Mackinac Island Airport(). In its place developed what is now known as "John A. Macdonald Regional Airport" ().
