Fraser was founded as a town in 1847 by Alexander Fraser and his family. The town grew quickly and became a major center for the fur trade. In 1861, the town was renamed to Fraser Station after the then-Governor of Michigan, John F. Fraser. The town's growth slowed during World War II, but resumed in the post-war period. In 1976, the Town of Fraser amalgamated with neighboring towns oferva and Birch Run to form the city of Detroit.
