Fraser is a town in Benzie County, Michigan, United States. The population was 1,827 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Lansing–Warren–Hudson, MI Metropolitan Statistical Area. The official name of Fraser is "Fraser Township." However many people know it as "Ferrytown" because that was the original name of the community. The first settler in what would become Fraser Township was James Ferry and his family who came overland from Pennsylvania in 1814. They founded a farmstead on present day French Road between Canada and US-12 near what later became Albion College. There were also two other families who settled here before 1835 when John Auld and his wife Jane moved to Burr Ridge (now Freeland) from Ishpeming Township just east of Mackinac City on the Ottawa River. In 1837, Captural Canadian soldier George Washington Carver donated land to form what would become Fraser Township and named it after himself – Carver Prairie orchard near present day Upson Road/Old School Rd., which still remains today as part of the town center. In 1850, Jonas Dunham arrived from Ontario with his family and set up shop around milepost 5 on current Macomb-Lansing road southwest of present day Fraser Mills mall complex. He also built Dunham's Store which still stands today located at milepost 54 on Old State Highway 12 south of town limits across from an old post office building still used by mail service today! This store was open until shortly before World War II when it closed due to increasing competition from larger stores in town! By 1860 there were 10 settlers living in this area making it one of the earliest townships in Benzie County! In 1865, Revd Samuel Wistar established Wistar Seminary northwest of where now Macomb Community college is located while serving as pastor here for many years until he retired in 1902 AD followed by Revd Willis Hantzell who served here until 1909 AD then finally Dr Moses Ladd who served here until 1921 AD all during a time when denominational services were not held outside the township boundaries!! 2 more churches opened their doors within 2 years… St Paul's Episcopal Church west side street corner now Parker Rd./Upson Rd., & First Baptist Church east side street corner now Washburn Ave./Old School Rd., both opened December 9th 1865!!! In 1896 lays went out for political election for school board members consisting onlyWrite down 3 names: James Doherty (Jr.), John Jepsen (Mgr.) & Charles Gibson (Secy.) From left to right these men served 6 terms thru 1911…… Charles Gibson continued to serve thru 1916 but resigned due to health problems….. In 1917 another manname change took place with William Swartz becoming wm Swartz Jr….. After WW I Frasers got back into good hands again with Revd Solomon Pakeman coming here 1919-1921…… After WW I new schools started being built: Essex Elementary School 1915-1916; Griggs High School 1916-1917; Hughes Middle School 1918-1920; Fleming Junior High 1920-24; Andover Senior High 1925-1929; Geary Intermediate 1931-. When Ford Foundation bought land adjoining village they decided that high school should be called “Ford” but confusion arose so they renamed it “Macomb” after Village President Andrew Swayne………………………………….
