Flint, Michigan is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan, on the Detroit River. The population was 797 at the 2010 census. By 1865, production had reached 2 million pounds (1 million kg) per year from various industries including shipbuilding, papermaking and munitions plants; making it one of America's largest manufacturing centers during that time period. The first store on the site of current-day Flint was built in 1814. In 1825, the town of Flint began to be organized into wards, which gave it some local autonomy. The Panic of 1893 caused a decline in business activity in Flint, prompting the establishment of a bank and other development projects. However, this did not help to revive the economy and by 1901 there were only five businesses operating within the city limits. In 1907, Flint amalgamated with neighboring Battle Creek to form what is now Michigan's 8th congressional district. This move helped promote growth within the city limits as well as increasing political power for residents within their new district. During World War II, Flint played an important role in manufacturing munitions for the war effort. Businesses such as Ford Motor Company and Chrysler Corporation sprang up around downtown during that time period and filled manyof the vacated buildings that had been used for housing during wartime shortages
