Flint was founded in 1795 by Nicholas Flournoy. The city became a main center for the production of glassware and other items during the 1800s. In 1815, Flint was designated as the capital of Michigan Territory and was hosting the first territorial government meeting. In 1824, Flint became part of the United States after being awarded to Michigan by President James K. Polk as part of the Compromise of 1850. The city experienced heavy industry growth during this time with an increase in manufacturing jobs and population. However, during World War II, due to its strategic location near Lake Superior, Flint saw a significant influx of military personnel and their families which led to some infrastructure development such as new schools and hospitals. After the war ended in 1945, Flint's economy slowly deteriorated as manufacturing fell out of favor and overall economic conditions declined throughout the Midwest following World War II. However, recent economic growth has seen revitalization efforts undertaken to improve infrastructure including new business districts, Light Rail Transit (LRT), and increased community engagement with various civic organizations
