The city was once a thriving center of industry and commerce, but its fortunes have plummeted in recent decades. Today, Flint is known as one of the most dangerous cities in America due to its high level of crime, poverty, and urban blight. Flint's history can be traced back to the early 1800s. The area that now makes up Flint was first settled by Native Americans who were soon followed by fur traders and missionaries. In 1821, General Anthony Wayne founded the city of Detroit on the ruins of Fort Dearborn at what is now downtown Flint. Detroit quickly became an important trade center due to its location at the mouth ofthe Detroit River. In 1832, it was decided that Flint should become a permanent seat for Congress because of its strategic location at the junction of two major rivers. Accordingly, Congress allocated $3 million dollars to purchase land in what is now downtown Flint and build a new Capitol building. Unfortunately for Flint, this money never arrived as Congress disbanded shortly afterwards without providing any plans or instructions about how it would be used. With no capital to speak of, local entrepreneurs began selling goods door-to-door from homes they had turned into stores on Proctor Street between Main and Washington Streets - which still stands today as a reminder of why some streets in downtown are so rough sledding even today (due largely to chemical contamination). These small businesses thrived until 1830 when severe flooding destroyed muchofthetown’s commercial district including mostofthecity’s buildings saveone old hospital which functioned as an Italianate restaurant until 1922 when it caught fire again ). In 1835–36 Edward Stiles erected here his brick schoolhouse on Main Street (now partof Eastern Market), serving as the first public educational institution west of the Allegheny Mountains . He also built apothecary shop on West State Street opposite modern day Goodrich Park , which served as his personal medical office during his lifetime . The first post office open in this communitywas establishedin1837andnamed “Cheboygan” afterthenumbertwocountiesinMichigan.(nowOntario) . By 1840 therewerefourbarber shops operating withinthe town limits; threegeneralstoresandonehotel .A cotton gin opened acoupleofyearsafterthatandproducedabout eightytons OF cotton each year beforeitclosedin1847 .
