Flint, Michigan is an American city located in the heart of the Great Lakes region. As of 2010, it had a population of 69,711 and is the largest city in the Detroit metropolitan area. The name "Flint" comes from Huron (French) meaning "the flashing." The town was founded on the Flint River by Potawatomi Indians about 1795. In 1801, General Anthony Wayne and his army destroyed Fort Dearborn on the river's east side to prevent its capture by French forces. The town was rebuilt at a cost of $152,000 and named for Gen. Wayne's father-in-law, Stephen Troup. It became an important industrial center during the 1800s with production of artillery shells, locomotives, beer brewing and zinc mining among its many industries. By 1900, Flint had become one of America's great cities with high-rise buildings and electric streetlights. However, during World War II most of Flint's manufacturing came to a standstill as Production Center No. 4 was bombed by Japanese bombers on December 7th 1942 killing more than 200 people including 15 children who were playing near the plant entrance when munitions detonated prematurely inside the building resulting in fire that quickly consumed all but two thirds of what remained of this massive structure including all downtown businesses which closed until 1949 when they reopened as part of a federally funded redevelopment project that also included demolition or conversion of many other large old downtown businesses including Eastern Air Lines hangar built in 1915 which housed America's first airline terminal and former Ford Rouge factory where automotive products were made before becoming trucks

The Flint area has been inhabited by humans for over 10,000 years. The first European to set foot in the area was Giovanni da Verrazzano, who crossed the Great Lakes in 1524. After his exploration, he named the area that now makes up Flint after the General of Italy's army who had defeated him at Battle of Flushing (1524). Flint became an important fur-trading center during the early 1800s. In 1801, it was made a municipality and began to grow as a manufacturing town. The city's earliest industries included making lead and silver coins, casting brass objects and making tents. By 1825, however, there were no more industries in Flint because of competition from Detroit. Because of this decline in industry and population, many residents left Flint for other parts of Michigan during the late 19th century. Many remained behind though; some started businesses such as glassblowing and papermaking while others worked in service jobs or opened their own homes. Some families even preserved traditional crafts like pottery making and weaving using techniques like kiln firing which persisted until around 1960. From its heyday in the late 19th century until World War II when it was bombed by Japan, Flint experienced significant economic growth due to its status as a major military munitions plant. However, during World War II much of what developed downtown were destroyed by bombing raids including part of Erie Street which still stands today as one of only two remaining structures from that period standing within walking distance of each other on Huron Avenue Downtown [the other being Holy Cross Catholic Church]. This bombing also caused extensive damage to local buildings including churches which are still standing today although they have been extensively renovated since then into apartments or office space[1]. In 1955 Pistons player Julius Erving moved to Flint from Newark NJ after playing collegiately at North Carolina State University where he led team to NCAA Championship game before going pro with Sixers 1951-1957) It was here that Erving learned how to play professional basketball through playing for his father who coached him at home
