Ferndale, Michigan is a city in Washtenaw County, Michigan, United States. The population was 9,873 at the 2010 census. Ferndale is home to the prominent Mount Elliott Observatory and has been the site of many telescope construction projects over the years. The first telescopes were built in Ferndale by Huckleberry Finn Telescope constructor Wm. K. Chapin in 1887-88 using a small telescope he had constructed himself from unpainted zinc and lead roofing nails and pieces of an old clock face found near his family's farmstead on Inverness Road. A few years later Augustus De Morgan erected a 3” aperture reflecting telescope on property adjoining his own home which he leased from Chapin until 1892 when he sold it to John Herschel who put up an 8” reflector with 100 lenses on its balcony for use by astronomers at Carl Sagan High School before moving it tobased at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York in 1904 where it stayed until 1960 when it was moved back to Mount Elliott Observatory. The observatory reopened as a museum in 1984 after being closed for several years due to damage caused by ice storms which damaged much of the building including Chapin's original Horizontal refractor mirror and equipment dating back to 1868! There have been many other owners of Mount Elliott Observatory over the years but all except one (John Herschel) remain anonymous today apart from Chapin's son-in-law Wm. Cavanaugh who purchasedMount Elliott Observatory from Chapin's widow in 1970 and continues its operation as the sole owner today with help from volunteers! In 1913 de Morgan again erected a 3" aperture reflecting telescope on property adjoining his own home which he leased from Chapin until 1914 when he sold it to Hiram Powers who put up an 8" reflector with 100 lenses on its balcony for use by astronomers at Ford Secondary School before moving it tobased at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York in 1904 where it stayed until 1960 when it was moved back to Mount Elliott Observatory! In 1924 Charles Townes Putnam donated 200 4x10 inch Schmidt-Cassegrain telescopes along with associated mounts, baffles and parts used during their construction into what came to be known as "Townes' Peak". This gift marked the beginning of what would become one of America's most important astronomical research institutions with contributions coming from many famous scientists such as Albert Einstein, Marconi, Watson & Crick etc.. It wasn't until 1957 that Japan became interested enought t make large donations however these remain unheard about among other museums like Mt Elliot Ovaltine Museum or Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum etc.. In 1966 Russian astronomer Nikolai Kardashev donated two 1 meter aperture star scopes making Ferndale one of only two U.S cities ever recipientsof this type of donation!! A few weeks ago we learned that Don Schleicher had passed away leaving behind an unfinished goal: build a 10 meter parabolic Schmidt camera lens based off his prototype design submitted while working on improving color vision technology for military aircraft.. Sadly this will now haveTo wait another 40+ years!!!

The city's economy depends largely on agriculture and manufacturing. The area around Ferndale has been inhabited for several thousand years and contains evidence of Native American life dating back to 1500 BC. One such site is an ancient petroglyph discovered in 2007 that depicts human-horse interactions and trade between the Muskegon culture and the Huron people during the late Mississippian period (A.D.–A.D 1240). Archeological excavations have also uncovered evidence of early European settlement here, beginning with French traders in 1701 who built Fort de Richelieu on what is now Michigan Avenue near present-day State Road 439S (). This fort served as a base for fur trading expeditions into what are now Ontario and Pennsylvania counties during this time period; among these traders were Joseph Marquette, later known as Father Superior Campion (), who led two exploratory missions from Detroit to Lake Superior in 1606–7, and Étienne Brûlé, also known as Father Jean Nicolet (). By 1800 there were more than 100 families living in three blocks of one wide streets across five blocks of two stories high along what is now Michigan Avenue ();[1] however most residents lived west of Michigan Avenue on land grant lands granted to various farmers by George Washington when he began his tenure as President of the United States in 1789.[2] On July 1, 1837, John Ferndale organized a township which would become Ferndale Township on the east bank of Grand River based on surveys taken that year by him and other settlers;[3] within two years it had grown to include all or parts of six other villages: Gratiot Heights (now unincorporated), Ionia Heights (now unincorporated), Eastman Township (now part of Midland), Northfield Township (now part of Flint), Westmoreland Township (now part of Lapeer), and Isabella Township (Now Escanaba). On December 15th 1837 JohnFerndale was made Mayor & recorder over all communities formed therein & townships annexed thereto with powers limited only to proper Meetings for Selecting Councillors not exceeding Twelve Men instead thereof where eachTownship held twenty four Men appointerd thereby making up one third Of Council but no vote could be given without Consent from 2/3rds Of All Elected And Appointed Citizens
