Ferndale is a city in Iron County, Michigan, United States. The population was 7,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Grand Rapids–Milton-Freeport Metropolitan Statistical Area. Ferndale has been called "the heart of the farming region" and "the commercial center of the area." The namesake for the city is Ferndale Township Supervisor John Neely Edwards who dedicated the town to his wife in 1892. The first settlers in what is now Ferndale were a group of Methodist missionaries from Kentucky who arrived on horseback in 1831. They named their settlement after General Lafayette which they found on their journey westward. The town was originally laid out as two squares with each side measuring half a mile (1 km). A post office was established at Ferndale on December 24, 1836, and it remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1865. In 1837, James Kapp founded Kapp's Mills which became one of the largest mills in Michigan. In 1840, Jnoah Hough founded Hough Paper Company which became one of the leading paper companies in America. In 1846, John Neely Edwards donated land to build a township near present-day Ferndale for himself and his wife Jane Hartnell Edwards but this never came to fruition because he died before its construction could begin. In 1850, Zebulon Pike erected a stagecoach stop on what is now Main Street near where he later sold land to become present day Ziebart's grocery store which still stands today across from IHOP restaurantatteries plaza across from Ameritrade Place mall). In 1861, James Sibley organized a canal boat landing called Sibley Landing that served ferries running between Detroit and Muskegon Heights until 1903 when it closed due to schedule changes by American Waterways Corporation.. A new community developed around the old mill site beginning with building operations starting spring 1954 called Northfield which became an integral part of downtown FerndALE until it burned down soon after becoming unincorporated status due to lack of funding including by then City Hall Mayor Dave Heineman who said "Northfield didn't have anything going for it." After several years without any permanent solution being found for Northfield development another developer purchased all rights to Northfield from local businessman Harry Smith within 2 years making it possible once again for groceries shopping and other retail businesses along First Avenue east from Main Street starting January 1st 2006... subsequent surveys have shown major redevelopment potential taking place adjacent First Ave & Mound Road as well as further south along Lapeer Rd., however no decisions have yet been made about these updates or final plans
