In 1915, when President Woodrow Wilson visited Michigan to deliver his final speech before leaving for his term as president, he stayed at the Brown House in downtown Ferndale and met with various business owners and residents there. That same year saw the opening of what would become one of Ferndale's most famous businesses: General Motors' Rouge Plant on First Street between Cedar and Maple Streets. Today that plant is home to multiple GM brands including Buick and Chevrolet passenger cars as well as trucks and vans under several other names including Saturn Ion, Pontiac G6/G8/G10/Firebird GTO and Mini Cooper S Convertible (MiniCooper models only). During World War II, many jobs were created by GM's wartime plant in nearby Flint which produced tanks, planes and ships among other things; this led to a large population growth during that time period because people who didn't have skilled jobs could find work atGM plants thanks to military production quotas set forth by US President Franklin D Roosevelt.
