Ferndale, Michigan is a town in Kent County, Michigan, United States. The population was 5,977 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Lansing–East Lansing Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded by John Ferndale on May 12, 1836 as a result of the donation of land from General James K. Polk to establish a military base in what is now Ferndale Township. The site that would become Ferndale was chosen because it had an abandoned fortification and there were no trees nearby to provide cover for soldiers while they reloaded their cannons. In 1846, ferndale became the seat of Kent County after the expiration of its original county government at Detroit. In 1861, when photojournalist William Fenton took his final picture of Fort Wayne during the American Civil War near present-day Ferndale Township, he enlisted local citizen Nellie Hitchcock (née Ladd) to help him snap pictures from her home on Main Street between West Third and East Fourth Streets within view of Fort Wayne; these photos are now known as "Fenton Photographs." At around this time,FerndALE began to be called "The Landmark" for its long history in township government and community development; by 1870 it had been accepted as one of two townships in Kent County - along with Auburn - which chose not to secede from Michigan during the Civil War. When Ferndale incorporated as a village in 1903 following passage by MICHIGAN LEGISLATURE OF 1901 OF A RESOLUTION AUTHORIZING THE FORMATION OF AVillage COMMISSION TO EXamine and report Upon Matters relating thereto AND making such recommendations As may Be Necessary FOR ESTABLISHING THE CHARACTERISTICS OF AVILLAGE LIFE IN SUCH TOWNHOOD’S CITIES AS NEW YORK CITY AND ANN Arbor. After World War II ended with Victory Over Japan Day on September 2 1945 and finally open access to hunting season on November 1 1945 thanks to importation restrictions placed upon Japan following Pearl Harbor attacks, many people relocated back into villages throughout east central Michigan due spoil war conditions caused by then new post-war Gun Control laws prohibiting possession or use any firearms without prior written consent from state police or other designated gun dealers/licensees etc... which made sales possible outside traditional markets like Detroit& Ann Arbor where prices were prohibitively high due mostly to production quotas set forth by major ammo companies/manufacturers who controlled distribution channels etc...
