The Old Sawmill was built in 1808 by Nicholas Hathaway and was used as a sawmill until 1907. It was then converted into a museum. The first gun sight in Ferndale was called the “Hickory” Sight. This sight consisted of three pieces that moved up and down to indicate range. It was first used by Captain Nathaniel Massie in 1793 during his siege of Fort Duquesne. It was first used by George Washington during his battle at Yorktown in 1781. The construction of this mill started on October 12, 1818 and finished on November 3, 1820. The purpose of this mill was to produce lumber for buildings and other objects in Ferndale and also for sale outside of town. From its inception until 1907, the Old Sawmill played an important role inFerndale’s economy because it produced lumber for local businesses as well as exported it overseas. In 1907, however, when ferndALE passed through statehood, its municipal government took over responsibility forsawmills within its borders which eliminated their importance as sources of revenue forFerndale residents . In 1992-1993, theOld Sawmill underwent renovation which included adding an exhibit about firearms history and restoration work done on it between 1912-1914

The first firearm to be mounted on a rifle was an American Firearm Company Model 1855 shotgun. In 1872, A.P. Smith & Sons introduced the world's first self-loading pistol in Ferndale. In 1893, the company introduced the revolver which became one of the most popular handguns in America. In 1907, Browning Corporation Introduced their "Bolt action" revolver which led to the creation ofFN Incorporated (Fenner National Firearms Manufacturing) as well as other handgun manufacturers throughout America. In 1919, artillerymen from Ft Wayne used Browning semi-automatic shotguns for target practice at Fort Snelling military base during World War I. This led to production of semiautomatic rifles by Colt Armaments Company and later SIG Arms Corporation( Sindel Arms). These guns were used by infantry and cavalry soldiers on both sides of World War II including troops stationed in Europe and Japan before being turned over to United States Military Forces after the war ended.
Ferndale is a city in Washtenaw County, Michigan, United States. The population was 43,898 at the 2010 census. Ferndale is part of the Detroit Metropolitan Area. The city was founded in 1837 by General John Butterfield. The first permanent settler in what became Ferndale was Captain George Armstrong who built a cabin on the east side of the river just south of present-day Main Street. This settlement lasted only a few months before being destroyed by flooding from the river's rise upstream that year. Captain Armstrong's wife and three children were also killed in this event. In 1839, Major James Haggerty obtained land north of present-day Main Street and started to build a house there called "Haggerty House". However, due to navigation problems caused by Mud River flooding, Haggerty had to abandoned his project within two years. In 1845, Colonel Augustus Cassius Woodward purchased 1/3 interest in Haggerty House from Major James Haggerty for $1,200 cash which he used to purchase land between Maple and Clifford streets west of Main Street for himself and his family. He named this tract "Woodward Place". In 1850 he sold this tract to Ebenezer Farnsworth for $2,000 cash which he used to purchase land east of Main Street for himself and his family (now known as Farnsworth Boulevard). In 1851 Colonel Augustus Cassius Woodward donated 2 acres (0 hectares) of woodland northwest ofMain Street (later known as Elmhurst Avenue) for local use only – it is still home today to many trees! One account reports that Colonel Woodward asked: "who will plant these trees?" A man from nearby Mount Clemens answered boldly: "I will!" And so began one of Michigan's most popular tree-lined streets! "It may be objected," writes historian John Littell about early ferndalese life "that $1200 would not have bought much than half an acre at this time... But it would have been enough for pioneers like Augustus Cassius Woodward and Ebenezer Farnsworth to start new lives on virgin soil." These pioneers soon erected log cabins withBirch bark roofs with out doors - though some did manage more elaborate homes such as Cooksmas Hall - located on what is now Arlington Heights Road across from Masonic Lodge No 953 today. It should be noted that while Woodward established Ferndale as a town center during its early days - including its first post office - much civic activity took place at various private residences until Ferndale’s incorporation into the City of Detroit on November 3rd1868." Ferndale's history can be traced back to 1837, when George Washington Woodward and his brother James Woodward settled in what is now Ferndale after leaving Detroit for unknown reasons. They named their new village after General Anthony Wayne's birthplace, Ferndale Township. The first post office opened in 1840, but due to an lack of customers the business closed within one year. When the town charter was granted on December 12th of that year it read " ferndale Township . . ." In 1845 the name was changed to "Ferndale", according to an act of the Michigan Legislature which had been passed two weeks earlier. The city's first mayor was Abram Stroud who served from 1888-1892 under Mayor John Blythebrooks before he replaced him with Grover Cleveland as mayor on January 1st, 1893 effective February 15th that year following Cleveland's inauguration as Ulysses S Grant's Vice President on January 20th (see also City of Ferndale). As part of its incorporation into Washtenaw County on November 17th 1907, Ferndale became one of the last cities ever created within Michigan; this change followed similar incorporation ceremonies throughout Washtenaw County as other county seats were reorganized during annexation efforts during World War I including Royal Oak (1914), Battle Creek (1917), Ann Arbor (1920), and Flint (1922).
