Ferndale was founded in 1834 by Jacob Ferndale and his wife, Rachel. The town changed its name to Ferndale in 1851 after being made a part of the Michigan Territory. In 1859, the village of Ferndale was incorporated as a city. In 1899, the city passed an ordinance that prohibited marriage between people of different races. The ordinance was repealed in 1903. In 1907, the city passed an ordinance that banned smoking indoors. The ordinance was repealed in 1929.
